Are Mipmaps Required for BSA's?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 3:50 pm

As the title asks. Just curious. I'm considering building BSA's for some of the mods I am running to clean up the Data folder some.

Mipmaps are required for display at different sizes. BSAs are just compressed archives. It does not matter whether the textures are packed or loose. That has nothing to do with the file's "state of completeness."

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to have mipmapped textures in BSAs otherwise something bad will happen. I know EW (or was it AN) had mipmaps added to the textures because of this...

Okay. Thanks. I guess if I am going to create BSA's for mods I use I better generate mipmaps just to be safe.

You won't need mipmaps on texture "because you're packing them into a BSA".
You already need mipmaps on textures because some sorts of them won't work without, period.
Oblivion using the lower mipmap levels for lower texture size settings in the config menu, and thus any setting else than "high" showing severe issues with those textures (rainbow-colored checker patterns coming into mind here), is only the start.
However, there are texture files, icons for example, which "must not have" mipmaps. So don't just go and add mipmaps to everything.
If it doesn't have mipmaps already before packaging into a BSA, it definitely won't need any "for" packaging into a BSA.
(Of course things you're going to pack into the BSA could be broken already by missing mipmaps where required, but having mipmaps itself is "not" a requirement for the packaging process.)

Oh, okay. Thanks. So it's a good idea to generate mipmaps, but not required. Good to know.

Well, generating mipmaps would let people not running the game with 'Large' set for texture size to use the mod. No, it is not required, but if that were standard there would be fewer "My icons are all out of whack!" and "My world map disappeared" threads and the like...

Is it still possible to download the OOO BSA's? That's the big one I will make into some BSA's (separate ones for meshes, textures and sounds). Save me a bunch of time if I can download the BSA's.

I don't know what you mean by make into BSAs. You can get the OOO BSA from the FCOM thread, one BSA.

No filefront deleted the last OOO bsa that got uploaded.

You can take the current version and turn into bsa. But you will have problem once again with a few armor not showing up correctly.

That bsa has not been released yet, check your information once again... :whistling:
