Trailer Dragon Shout

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 9:39 am

First off, the trailer? AWESOME. I love how they timed the action with the music, particularly the Dragon Shout.

I've got three things to say about that and a question.

1. Beth should definitely have the skyrim theme roaring in the background during the game's climix - I'm going to be a saaad panda if that isn't the case. Well, until I pause it, load up the music on youtube, then resume the game. But still, it would be awesome to see that happen.

2. Dragon's look awesome - I especially like the fire breath, the effect and sound were both extremely visceral. I love the effect of absorbing the dragon's soul when the Nord slayed it, very good.

3. The Dragon Shout VO and visuals don't disappoint - I think they're going to make a fine addition to TES.

And now the question, what do you think the Dragon Shout the Nord used did? Was it the Force Push one we've heard about? Have a different theory?

Commented on it in another thread but here's my theory again:

I think the dragon shout made the dragon blind! It seemed the dragon, after getting "shouted at", knew the general area of the Dragonborn guy but couldn't get an accurate strike (mainly referring to when the dragon was flying down towards him with its mouth open but ended up exposing its belly).

It was the force push one. Too bad the dovahkiin didn't use the firebreathing dragon shout. Would've been sweet to see the two firebreathing collide from the two of them.

I think its the force push one, but I could be mistaken. Certainly, the focus seemed to be on showing how the dragon shout looked and sounded rather than what it did, and in that regard, I'd say it's pretty good, though since I understand that all races and each six gets a different voice for dragon shouts, I wonder what it will sound like for other races.

And I think it would be nice to hear the main theme in the game's climix. People have complained about the climatic scenes in Morrowind and Oblivion being underwhelming in the past, and I think part of the problem is the lack of appropriately dramatic music. I mean, just look at Oblivion, you see two gigantic combatents fighting it out, and then you have the generic droning dungeon music playing. And Skyrim's main theme sounds pretty appropriate for an epic battle against a large, powerful foe, which is what I expect Bethesda to go for with the final battle. By comparison, Morrowind's main theme wouldn't have worked well for the fight against Dagoth Ur, though I think it would have worked well if it started playing after he was defeated.

But Skyrim's theme while fighting Dagoth Ur would be cool!

I've never wished I could be a video game protagonist more than I do now.

I haven't heard of the fire breathing shout - sounds awesome!

I've now watched the trailer 5 times. Probably 10 by the end of the week lol

Oh man, this. Whichever shout he used in the trailer was awesome, but I really want to use a fire breath shout in the game.

Also, relevant screencaps:

Whatever the effect was, they weren't ready to show us yet. Didn't you notice that as the blue mist went past the dragon, they sent the camera flying along with it, so we couldn't see the dragon's reaction?

Several theories here:

1. They aren't finished with the dragon's reaction animation so decided to skip it ...
2. The shout animation isn't finished yet ....
3. They didn't want us to know what it does to the dragon yet for some reason ...

Whatever the reason, we didn't get to really see the dragon's immediate reaction because the camera was suddenly flung way past the dragon toward the hill in the distance ....

Why do that at all unless there is a reason for it ?

um...dramatic effect? did you not notice how the scene cut to different locations and events along with the melody?

also it doesn't really sound like "fus ro dah" to me, but i dunno.

also as [censored] awesome as their synching the shout to the song is, i've played this trailer like thirty times in the background just to hear the song. upload that [censored] on its own, yo.

Only the texture res of the dragons was very very low. Which is weird since I thought characters, creatures, etc... should always afford to have a high res texture. As long as the hi-res texture is on these objects, any console can handle.

Dragon shouts...
I've never really cared super much for them.
I don't don't like, but I don't "WOWW AWESOME" either. I'm kinda neutral about dragon shouts.

I didn't know we had a fire breathing one, and secretly I was hoping for one!

It was force push, someone on the team already confirmed it in some other thread.

My theory is that this was the characters first encounter with a dragon - doesn't exactly look like a confident fighter in the beginning, and that the force push was shouted by sheer accident or by frustration or something. You then see the shout "travel" towards the mountains, indicating a journey to come... Where *someone* is listening. Sometime after, he gets sent for (someone must know the dragon slayer, right?), he climbs the 7k and his destiny as Draonborn is revealed to him.

Have no idea if that is the case though, just me trying to "get" the storytelling. When it comes to TES, I get the feeling that nothing is left to chance.

Heh, can you imagin that? Almost got exicuted for who knows what, got saved by some old guy who kept going on about dragons and lightning in the distiance, finally got away from him when a dragon of all things shows up, it chases you down the mountain side, corners you, and you just turn around planning on swaring out a storm when suddenly the voice of a dragon comes out instead? :P

Epic, and I really like the idea, I wonder how they'll introduce the idea to us. I'm looking forward to the mq.

But really, can you imaging the worst day ever, and just as you're about to sware so much your ancesters would roll in their graves when suddenly a force push explodes from your mouth? :P Epic.
