I don't view characters as extensions of myself, I view them as just that, Characters.
It's an opportunity to explore personalities and mindsets other than my own, so naturally I want to get into 
everyone's head.  Male and Female characters.  It's like writing a book, you don't go "I'm only going to write extensions of myself."
Then again, I mainly roleplay.  And no, I don't get creepy and "over-sixualized" with characters, having people wear armor that barely would be considered metal swim-wear.  I find that immature and lacking in depth, personally.  You don't get to "know" a character that way, you're just distracted by them.  I'd like to think I can dive fairly deeply into the male and female characters I make.  Men and women, aren't that different from a mental standpoint.  Most of those differences 
are social constructs.  There've been ruthless female warrior-queens and compassionate emotional male poets.
