Restarting Oblivion: Recomended Mods?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 4:47 pm

Recently, i've been looking to start a new mmo or rpg of some sorts. I used to play Oblivion back in the day, but i lost interest in the game when cheat codes became a way of life for me to skip corners and to be lazy. I've decided to create a new character, with a focus on doing no cheating at all, but having the right mods set up so that i can enjoy my gameplay the way its supposed to be.

I'm actually really interested in creating a rogue/hunter/thief character. With that character I have some preferences to as to how my game is set up in terms of mods. Some of the specifics would be:

1. I'd really like to have conjuration as one of my main 7 skills. I really like the idea of summoning a creature into battle to fit into the whole hunter thing. The thing is, it seems that only 100% mages ever really have any magicka to use such spells. I'd really like some sort of mod that could possible reduce the magicka cost of summoning, or possibly even increase the default starting-out magicka base. I really do feel its way to low and i hope they change it in TES:V.

2. Potion and poison making really fits into my desired character, and i'd love to actually get to a high enough alchemy level where i can effectively use poisons and potions in combat that will actually make somewhat of a difference. I wasn't, however, very fond of the system they used in terms of leveling up and creating potions via alchemy. If anyone could recommend an alchemy overhaul mod, it would be appreciated.

3. One of the biggest things i disliked about oblivion is how big of a difference choosing your class and birthsign and class was, and how some of them absolutely svcked. Any suggestions on some overhaul mods that could improve this, perhaps even ones that could fit into my hunter character preferences?

I know there's more things that i'd really like to have modded before i start my character, but they don't come to mind right now. When i remember them i'll update this thread and see if i can get any more feedback.

I'd really appreciate it if the Oblivion modded community could give me some advice and help! Thanks in advance everyone :)

I can't answer question 2 or 3 (although I agree with you on both points) but for question 1 Supreme Magicka is a fairly good bet. It also lets you summon more than one creature depending on your conjuration level, and has loads of other cool spells if you ever diside to be a mage. For question 3 there are a few mods that overhaul the levelling system entirely. I don't use any but I know of Progress and Oblivion Exp (I think that's what it's called). Someone else will know better than me.

Beside your requests, if you're planning to be a theif or criminal I would strongly reccomend Reneer's Gaurd Overhaul. It makes gaurds much smarter and more realistic, and therefor makes them funner to outsmart. It also comes with a cool disguises feature which you can buy.

Hmm... I'd have to reccommend the Race Balancing Project (RBP) and Less Annoying Magic Experience (or LAME) for all your magic/birthsign/race needs. Together, they really work nicely for a hunter style character. (I should know, as I tried one before. If you decide to use RBP and LAME, I recommend a Wood Elf with the Thief Birthsign.)

As far as alchemy goes, I'm using one right now that's pretty nice, though my current character doesn't use much in the way of alchemy, so I'm not sure about all its features. The mod is http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25226 .

I'd suggest OOO in general. You will get some minor tweaks to magic use (higher damage/a few unique spells/improved mana regen), which will probably not serve quite the purpose you are looking for, but every other aspect of the mod will make you feel as though you are playing an entirely new game. For magic specific mods I would go with either lame or supreme magicka. With OOO you will be able to get animal summons however as well as befriend wildlife which would be beneficial to a hunter style character. Potions also become a necessity instead of just a vendor item. Poisions will help cripple your often time more dangerous enemies and potions will keep you healed and your magic high. Not quite a change to alchemy, but it makes it much more useful. Classes will also become more unique. Where high armor and weapon skills were important before, they are now balanced out. High speed and stealth skills will become much more helpful in avoiding fights that are too much for you. Dodging attacks is a much better way of surviving then taking a beating.

That being said OOO will also give you great amounts of new items, enemies, challenges, and even a few quests.

1. 3. Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul
1. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20371 and/or http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12466
2. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25226 it is a good alchemy mod, but it didn't fit my tastes
3. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22124 + http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25266 (If you don't use BAIN)

Misc Mods for a Stealth Character:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16137
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=31908

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5156
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23484 OR Duke Patrick's Combat Archery
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14723 Not compatible with Duke Patrick's mod, but a fix is WIP (maybe Crossbows are not too much involved in stealth, but it does his work, so I recommend it)

I'll just add that RBP changes the base Magicka Pool to be x4 instead of x2, which is nice for some user's playing styles. To balance that out, RBP also raises the armor penalty steeply. That should not matter much for a character that is not constantly weighed down by armor and has lots of Intelligence, however.
