How does Oblivion recall Saved Files?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:04 am

Ok, I had to re install Oblivion recently. But when I did, I was able to just use my old save folder (placed in MyDocuments>Oblivion>(ini file/game saves etc).

How does Oblivion know where to recall this info?

if i move this folder, will Oblivion still be able to find the info?

i need some1 to explain the mechanics of this as its confusing.

ps. if install oblivion in 2 directories and make mods in each one, which directory will the game try to load? the one in my C drive or my backup in my D drive??

The location is hardcoded into the game. You'd have to manually delete the information there if you don't want it.

No.

Assuming this is even possible, it would use whichever folder the CS told the registry it wants. You can't have two locations linked in the Windows registry.

ok thanx for the info :) quick question: do you need to manually install oblivion from the CD into another folder (for backup purposes) or can you just copy and paste into the backup folder??

You can copy/paste.

Also for your above question, I use separate folders for saves related to each set of mods I use. For instance, if I have Folder 'A' and Folder 'B', I can just rename one of them to Saves and Oblivion will show those saves in game. I also include a modlist text file in the folder that tells me which mods I used for those saves and the proper load order. Makes switching things pretty easy.

You may be interested to know that Wrye Bash's "save profiles" feature does the same thing, and lets you switch profiles just by choosing them from a menu.

The game's INI file has a setting for the save path, and Bash 's save profiles work by changing that to point to a different save directory, instead of actually renaming things.
