Not to bother you guys -- I'm sure this forum gets frequent requests for technical support with the earlier games by newbs such as myself -- but DOSbox hates me.

I downloaded Daggerfall from Bethesda's site and proceeded to install it with DOSBox per the instructions provided. It worked, then worked again later when I followed the instructions for playing the game again. Now, when I enter those commands, DOSBox tell me that I "must have inserted the wrong disc". I tried twice more, perfidiously ensuring that I entered exactly the correct commands, and it's not working.

I apologize for any bothersomeness that I may be providing to you, and a thanks-in-advance to anyone who may provide me with a bit of assistance with my problem.

If you followed the http://static.gamesas.com/downloads/games/daggerfall_legal_and_installation.pdf, the "wrong CD" error generally happen because of two reasons.

• You're using an older version of DOSBox than 0.73, the solution is to download the latest release of http://www.dosbox.com/.
  
• When you mount the CD in DOSBox, the "-label Daggerfall" part is case sensitive. You must write Daggerfall, not daggerfall or dAGGERFALL or anything else.

Thanks, Freddo, I tried again and it worked. I think that the case-sensitive Daggerfall was my problem. Anyways, my problem is solved.

I guess it's my turn with the same question.

I had been using DOS box 0.72 with no issues and just changed to 0.74 on my desktop. For a while everything was OK, but then it zapped to always using Z: at startup, and then Daggerfall insisted I was using the wrong drive for the disk. I changed Z.cnfg to point to C:\DOS\Dagger\Arena2\ (Which is where I have the game) on both path and cdpath, and made an extra config file for DOS Box (Which writes it's config files to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Files\DosBox) and created a DosBox shortcut and put "C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -conf daggerfall.conf under the Target field, but when loading the shortcut it continues to load the default config file, uses Z: instead of C:, and Daggerfall continues to insist that I am using the wrong drive. trying to add the -conf line in the Start In: field results in Windows saying no such file exists. I added the start up lines for mounting the C drive and Fall.exe to the daggerfall.conf as well.

So the game is in C:\DOS\Dagger? What do you write when you mount C?

The way I have mine set up is

mount c c:\dosgames( or subfolder)\daggerfall -freesize 1000

the Arena 2 folder holds the data for the game. Maybe thats where a hickup could be.

 mount d c:\dosgames\DFCD -t cdrom -label Daggerfall

make sure to have the DFCD file in the subfolder.

Also make sure you are using the right DOSbox for your OS.

If it still doesnt work uninstall it and reinstall, without a config file written for it. (only as a last resort!)


I hope this helps I'm not good at configs so I just manually type in the info in DOSbox...

just 'cd Dagger'. When I would run DOSBox it already had C:\DOS mounted, so all I had to type was the change directory line =/

I ended up grabbing 0.72 off my flash drive and used that and everything worked surprisingly. I went into the config file and scrolled down to the bottom and found these lines

I don't know if they were there when I downloaded it, or if I typed them in myself, but I had gotten DOS box a long long time ago. I feel a tad stupid now for not noticing those lines :facepalm:
