Instrumental Music

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:57 pm

Since my Old Songs thread died a couple of days ago, here's another music thread. But this time, it's about...*drumroll*...INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC! I will provide some myself, unlike last time, and discuss away.

I already linked this in the YouTube thread, but I'll do it again by Jove.

It's one of my new favorite instrumental tunes, and in terms of how often I listen to it it's right up there with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bC9-KGcNXM. Speaking of Hanz Zimmer, I consider him a modern Mozart or Bach for all his compositions.

If we are talking about composers, then there was a not-so-old thread about this somewhere here. But if we're talking about virtuosos on a single instrument that's a different case.

I just going to stick with the acoustic guitar since it's the only instrument I know well enough to stand by my opinion.

As I've posted many times on this forum, I'm a huge fan of JG Thirlwell, who was first famous for his rock project, Foetus, but has done a lot of soundtracks and other instrumental-based music under various guises. His 'sound' is overall closest to Michael Giacchino, I think. Here are a few of his projects:

http://youtu.be/Yhs7WnqXUBM. A hugely eclectic mix of styles from spy-noir, jazz funk and drum 'n' bass through to Stravinskyesque classical, this is a medley of a few of the tracks, performed in New York last summer by Thirlwell's Steroid Maximus.
http://youtu.be/1dMuzPZ_gOA. This is actually mislabelled - the track is 'Fluorescent Radiation'. This is very soundtracky classical stuff with a chamber orchestra - this album (The Mesopelagic Waters) being very focussed around strings.
Steroid Maximus
http://youtu.be/4Yakd2jlRtg. This is a clip of the Robosonic Electic Orchestra rehearsing. LEMUR built the 'robots' - automated percussion instruments - while Thirlwell wrote the music. Unfortunately I've never seen a clip of the whole thing.
http://youtu.be/otu3A1Efd_k. One of the many hundreds of remixes he's done for acts as diverse as NIN, Pantera, Swans and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This is firmly in the 'dance music' spectrum, but it's absolutely brutal. I love it!

It's pretty much all I listen to. I don't care to make the distinction "instrumental music", as if it were some sort of niche or something.

So if we are talking about instrumentals, could that be like old heavy metal music with just music and no vocals? How about Mike Oldfield or Yanni? Stuff like that as well?

That was nice, although I prefer intense , loud orchestras.

I pretty much only listen to instrumental music, never been a fan of lyrics (excluding choirs). A couple of days ago I heard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ewc93oFXMxc for the first time and I quite like it :)
