Making Oblivion seem new

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 3:10 pm

While I wait for TES V to be announced, I figure I might get Oblivion going again. The problem is that I have played the crap out of the game. I don't think I'd be able to get into it unless it felt like a new game. I'm not talking about making it look pretty, but beyond that it's hard to say for sure what I'm looking for.

So what kinds of mods should I be looking for. Obviously one (or more) of the overhauls are a good place to start. What else?

If you are familiar with modding the game then go for FCOM. If you haven't used mods before then OOO + MMM might be a better route.

Apart from Overhauls, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1106890-the-unique-landscapes-project/ mods, many of which come with quests and together turn Cyrodiil into a whole new beast, http://www.invision.tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/files/file/292-the-ayleid-steps-3/, makes exploring the countryside and ruins interesting all over again, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6665 and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20575 or http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4387 to bring some life to the game.

Suppose this would have been a good thing to mention: Yeah, I'm familiar with modding Oblivion and I've run FCOM before. I haven't tried most quest or content mods though.

Deserts of Anequia?

Dunno, there's a few big mods in the works. DR6, UV2, Unholy Darkness, The Tamriel Worldspace Project, Return to Sance Tor, Nehrim (English translation)

You're missing out on 99.9% of the fun. Windfall was excellent for a low level character, all of Simyaz's stuff is gold, etc. DoA merges in perfectly, and Unique Landscapes deals with spicing up the default landscaping.

Also, think about giving Morrowind a shot while you shoot the breeze for TESV.

Yes, I am aware of the fact that Morrowind is the greatest game ever. Other games weep that I could not love them the way I loved Morrowind. Unfortunately, I don't have Morrowind, and for this reason I am sad.

And I know that I'm missing out by not having played quest/content mods. That's why I'm asking for recommendations. ^_^

I recommend looking into the archive and try out Daggerfall. http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm.

If ya haven't play Shivering Isle, than play that. WAY different experiences than being in Cyrodiil.

As for mods, well, pick a profession and find specific mods for that profession.

If ya want to change how everyone looks, I suggest looking into http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22787 and/or http://www.tesnexus.com/modules/members/index.php?id=534078.

Also, find a quest ya haven't done in http://knol.google.com/k/toql-the-oblivion-quest-list# and do it. Or find something to roleplay like http://www.gamesas.com/?showtopic=931523 and see how long one can stay in that kind of roleplaying style.

One of the biggest complaints I have about the game is that there is almost no variety among dungeons. Anything that adds hidden questlines or unique bosses or something would help immensely.

Oh, and by "unique bosses" I don't mean, "Oh, that's cute -- this one has a name." Each boss should feel like a new encounter.

And of course, quest/content mod recommendations are appreciated.
