Gyms?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 2:52 pm

Hmmm for myself no.
However if it's in I don't have to use it, so if a dev sees this, likes it I don't mind it being in.
Still won't use it though, I'd rather they spent the time making it that your skills are never out matched in the game world to a great extent.
Than giving players a way to grind experience and forcing them to use it to face tough foes.

I'm kind of having trouble understanding what that last part means. Can you please clarify?

WOOT!! An I don't care button, thank you for including it.

Are they rare around here? I'm relatively new.

To be honest, to me mind you, an archery gym sounds rather like a pokemon gym. I'd rather not have the one thing trainers had be taken away from them. Like I said before, I'd rather have the trainer's job expanded upon. I'd also like to have more guilds mind you, but I'd rather not have them take away from trainers. There could be trainers in the guilds, but guilds for people to walk in and just train themselves would be a poor business decition for the owner.

Well, the trainers could simply be placed in the gyms instead of randomly throughout the world. It seems like this would be a steadier job than being in random places waiting for students to find them. And also, Archer's Gym does sound like a poke'mon gym.

So I should go to the gym to raise my stats repeating the same action over and over again in a safe and monotone routine.
I don't like it.

I would prefer to call it training grounds, just sounds better. I would like it to replace the way training was done in the other TES games.

Players should go to the gym. Not their characters.

I agree with this also. I actually just got back from a gym myself :toughninja:

Or you can practice your individual combat techniques on something that won't die. You'd be able to fully realize that awesome fighting technique you've been spending a few hours on. And, like I said before, you wouldn't gain progress towards skills after they are Lvl.25 or so.

Edit: @Nightblade_Y: Good Idea. "Gym" sounds a bit too modern and bland, doesn't it?
And in response to saying players should go to the gym, that's tough for me. Being under 16 has disadvantages.

It's tedious. So no, I don't want it.

I voted no specifically against a gym as thats a modern concept that doesn't sit well in a pseudo medieval setting.

BUT I do approve of ways to train like archery contests, melee tournaments, jousting and what not. Mount and blade did it pretty well (the tournaments) and it seems a relatively easy thing to add.

Yes, but only if I can collect a badge from each gym, then use said badges to gain access to higher level gyms.

I do like the way skills level up in Elder Scrolls games, I think all RPG's should use this system. As for the gym bit...I think guilds alone should be restricted to this task personally.

It's quite fine for corresponding guilds to have it, but then again, the harsh and rugged terrain would be good enough a gym as any by itself.

Not really, if someone agrees with the OP then you can guess his reasoning is what the OP said. The OP wants to know why people disagree, he knows why people agreed. It WAS his argument after all.
I kind of like the idea, but I would simplify it to something like up to level 25 you can level combat skills by attacking combat dummies. Something non-intrusive and simple.

Spot on. This.

Instead of trainers instantly increasing your skill, this would be agreat touch! Wow, I honestly cannot believe so many are against this idea. :o

In Morrowind, that big rock just outside of the Fort Moonmoth was my favorite gym for raising my Acrobatics skill. lul.

dummies have no agility so if a gym works, then swinging your weapons at a wall or tree should level you up too.

i like skill trainers in that they can show you better techniques to use and you can fight them to train. (in my imagination, i don't want to have to watch this play out)

the penalty for boosting your skills is paying gold.

i don't want to add another penalty with grinding against dummies.

also, there are monsters and game animals everywhere, so i don't think it would fit the setting to have a gym when there's knife work needing doing.

Sure, but only as a way to replace trainers I'd like it. Instead of talking to a trainer and poof you have 5 points in marksman, you talk to a trainer and spend X time at a archery range and poof your skill is up. Basically a way to add context to how a trainer helps you, by adding the training to the trainer's lesson.
