Next-gen N-GAGE coming fall 2007

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 2:32 pm

Right now http://www.gdconf.com/ is nearing it's end, and during this week there has been talk about the next-gen N-GAGE that will go live sometime in September or so. The main new thing about it is that this time it's no specific N-GAGE device, but rather a software framework that will be available for several Nokia S60 smartphones. And I reckon it will become the norm for their S60 phones in 2008.

So far it's been little talk about what's interesting, the games. Instead there are talk about numbers and and how widespread it will be with a huge potential market. Which is nice, but if there are no games for the new N-GAGE platform, it doesn't matter.

That said, http://www.elderscrolls.com/games/shadowkey_overview.htm was one of the few interesting titles for the original N-GAGE and it would be quite awesome if a sequel found it's way into the new platform. Heck, it would still be very awesome if it was just a Shadowkey remake!

News came out last week and it seems they are looking for a release of the next-gen N-GAGE in november now. The official N-GAGE website has been updated too.

As I said in the previous post, seeing a Shadowkey remake for the new N-GAGE would be lovely.

Assuming that the new version is faster perhaps a straight port (or straigthish) might result in a faster framerate! ;)

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for ^_^ It would be awesome B)

As far as I've gathered there seem to be 5 main differences between the old N-Gage and the new N-Gage.
  • Not locked into one specific device, but a platform available for http://www.n-gage.com/get_ngage/devices.html.
  • 240x320 resolution instead of 176x208.
  • 332/369 MHz ARM CPU, instead of the 104 MHz (except for the Nokia N73 which is 220 MHz). More available RAM aswell.
  • Some of the devices have a 3D hardware chip that is compatible with OpenGL ES 1.1.
  • Games are bought and distributed online instead of being sold in stores. Either downloaded directly to the phone, or by using a PC.

So after lots of delays, the http://blog.n-gage.com/archive/getoutandplay/. http://www.nokia.com/A4136001?newsid=1206899

Now we just need a Shadowkey remake for it, preferably with a longer viewing distance and a better ingame map :P

N800 is using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maemo (Linux) for it's operating system. A http://pupnik.de/dosbox.html is available for it that should be able to run Arena, but I don't think it would run very fast.

Since it's using Maemo and not Symbian 6, 7 or 8, playing Shadowkey on it would be impossible.

Well, it seems like Vir2L gonna port two of their Nintendo DS games to the new N-Gage; http://www.vir2l.com/template.php?id=ngage.

http://www.n-gage.com/ngi/ngage/web/se/en/showroom/gamedetail.609.GameDetail.html#

Now I just hope they will also port their Shadowkey game from the old N-Gage to the new N-Gage :P (while giving it a longer viewing distance, better ingame map and better quest journal)

Well, that's that. http://blog.n-gage.com/archive/mobile-gaming-evolves-%e2%80%93-ovi-store-is-here/ (or will be next year anyway), so no point in this thread anymore.
