I'd suggest to go to an electronics store and look at blu-ray playback on some 1080p 32" TVs

If it is relatively far away from you when you are watching it, probably you need to get up above 40" before your eyes really start to notice the difference between 720p vs 1080p.

obviously for PS3 games, they do not go above 720p resolution, so you are only missing out a bit on the blu-rays

That helps (ease my worrying). For movies, I watch from farther away than I do for games... probably about 6-8 feet away for movies (rough estimate). About game resolutions, then why is it that some (some, not all) PS3 game cases advertise 1080i and 1080p resolutions in addition to the others? What does that mean? For example, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Demon's Souls only have up to 720p on their cases. Assassin's Creed II and Final Fantasy XIII state 1080p with my TV even saying Final Fantasy XIII (but not Assassin's Creed II) is running at 1080p.

Hmm...

I'm not the best person to ask about consoles because the last one I owned was the NES about 20 years ago.

But AFAIK the current gen consoles can only handle processing graphics up to 720p resolution and if you play connected to 1080p television the console "up-scales" the image to 1080p, just like DVD players that upscale DVD image.
