She may have been breaking Imperial laws on artifact trafficking.

Actually, while such curiosity would be typical, I seem to recall a fellow guildmember (don't recall who, maybe I'll look for it next time I play) expressing concern for what might happen if she got caught.

It is against the guild rules to steal from a guild member, so if she was caught she could be expelled, but no, the Mage's Guild isn't evil. It's just that some members have different morals then others.
Spoiler
(Especially Ranis. Now she is crazy and a loose canon.

The Mages Guild's main goal is the sharing of knowledge. They are basically the academia of Tamriel. As all big institutions they became big, fat, slow and highly bereaucratic (which Galerion describes himself).

However the Guild itself is actually quite noble, compared to say the Psijics or the Telvanni. They provide knowledge to anyone who qualifies. I also think Traven, while naive, was actually trying his best to help AND that what happened during his service was actually mostly not his fault. I think Mannimarco was infiltrating the guild much sooner than Traven was an archmage. If anything, he saved the guild and sacrificed himself for it. (I only wish someone would make a nice "rebuild the guild" questline mod for the archmage PC)

They also kill people who don't join, or don't pay their guild fees. Very noble.

It's hardly the only guild with a few bad influences. Especially in Morrowind.

Whatever the case, Pelinal Whitestrake wore armor bearing the image of the Amulet before the Nedes took White Gold Tower.

Though to be fair, he was from the future :P

Sure, but that doesn't justify anything. In Daggerfall as well you were sent to kill other mages guild members.
