Having trouble installing DOs 32a

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 1:27 am

So, I'm being prevented from loading my save and my backup save due to error 519.

I tried installing Dos32a to try and work around the problem, but I don't really understand the instructions that the uesp gives.

First, it asks me to:
-Download Dos32a, you should have SB.EXE and DOS32A.EXE (and other files)

-Copy the SB.EXE and DOS32A.EXE into your \DAGGER directory (where DAGGER.EXE and FALL.EXE are)

-IMPORTANT Make a backup of FALL.EXE, in case this messes it up!

I did all three of those things, no problem.

THEN, it asks me to:

-COPY FALL.EXE FALLBAK.BAK

-sb /R fall.exe

WTF? It doesn't tell me where to copy fall.exe and fallbak.bak to. I can't even find where fallbak.bak is located.

And what the hell does "sb /R fall.exe" mean?

Help would be greatly appreciated. I understand the principle, that I replacing the original memory extender with this new one. So, if I could just understand how to find the original memory extender (which I'm afraid is embedded in fall.exe) and how to properly replace it, then I won't need to figure out these silly instructions to begin with.

P.S. I'm running Dosbox on Mac OSX 10.5.8, in case that's relevant.

Ther are two ways to use the DOS32a extender - You can replace (/R) the current extender in the EXE file so that it will always use DOS32a - the way you described ( The SB progam does that IIRC),
or you can execute the extender when you run the program.
I use the command line way when I run the extender, as example \DOS32a fall.exe z.cfg (DOS32a should be in your Daggerfall directory, where fall.exe is)

The command line use only changes the current runtime use and does not change the fall.exe file.

Ok, DOS32a (3001) fatal could not open application fall.exe

tell me what I did wrong:

I have dagger fall in a folder called "games" and I have dos32a.exe inside the folder Dagger, along with fall.exe

Then, I copied dos32a.exe into games, so it's next to the folder "dagger"

Then I mounted c to "games" in dosbox

Then I typed:
dos32a fall.exe z.cfg

It ran the little copyright thing, then gave me that error.

EDIT:
Nevermind, I think I got it to work.

I mounted c straight to the folder "dagger" and now that command launches Daggerfall. That's supposed to happen, right?

After you mount "games",

type cd dagger

then

dos32a fall.exe z.cfg

Edit -

Yes, it should go right to the game. good luck!

Now you'll see what I mean about the skeletons. :cryvaultboy:

I've been playing the game, I just now decided to install Dos32a to try and rescue a corrupted save.

BY THE WAY:

I must have installed DOS32a wrong, because I can't load any saved games at all with dos32a running. I can't even click load, the moment I click the save itself Daggerfall encounters an error, number 203 or something similar.

Removed the dos32a.exe and launched daggerfall normally, and now I can load the save games. So the problem must be with dos32a or dosbox or the way I installed it, which I described above.

Please help, if anyone can.

I'm reluctant to start a new game until I can successfully run it with dos32a.

P.S. the skeletons are obnoxious, but not close to as bad as those harpies. especially when the crow makes the same exact noise after they kill you

EDIT: OK, I think I get it.

-so, I put dos32a.exe in the Dagger directory

-I mount c to that directory

-I run Dos32a by typing dos32a fall.exe z.config

-Daggerfall will launch

-I exit daggerfall and unmount c

-I remount c to the directory where Dagger and DFCD are located

-I run Daggerfall normally

-now Daggerfall is running, but with the better memory extender, right? And I shouldn't get corrupted saves as often, right?

Or am I wrong?

Do I have to run DOS32a everytime I start up dosbox, or is fall.exe changed forever?

If you launch as above, you need to run DOS32a everytime - if you look at the title bar for DosBox, it should say Dos32a in the header.

If you run the Stub program ( The SB.exe that is included with DOS32a) it removes (or disables) the built-in extender in Fall.exe and replaces it with the DOS32a extender.

Once you change the extender, I don't think it can be reversed, so make a backup of Fall.exe.

I just run the DOS32a program each time I play (I use a batch file that is called by DosBox).

Here is a link to the DOS32a documentation page -

http://dos32a.narechk.net/manual/index.html

Section 3 describes how to run the program.

ok DOS32A is in the heading and I can play the game under DOS32a.

Took a little while to wrap my stupid brain around it, but I'm good now.

Thanks for the help.
