Load Order - Suggestions?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:15 pm

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for improving performance and reducing RAM consumption on my current mod load list. I havent experienced major bugs or CTDs apart from the 1.8 gb RAM crash. However, I do tend to max out on RAM rather quickly, which I would like to avoid.

System Specs:
Processor: Intel Q8300 Quad @ 2.5 ghz
Video: GeForce GT 240
OS: Windows 7 32-bit
3 gb RAM ( :brokencomputer: ) - hopefully getting 4 gb RAM in a couple weeks, so I can give oblivion more RAM with LAA

Today I also PyFFI'd Oblivion - Meshes.bsa and some loose mod meshes in my data folder. One of my main concerns right now is that I havent updated my mods in over a month, so Im not sure if there are any needed fixes available. I also tweaked some things in the ini that supposedly allow for threading. As for whether or not they actually help with anything, thats questionable.

Anyways, suggestions and advice are appreciated.

Have you tried the 4GB oblivion patch?
Also, do you use BOSS for your load order?

No, because I only have 3 gb total RAM

Yes

I seem to have less issues with the crash if I dont travel around the map a lot, which makes sense because less content has to be loaded that way.

Not with a 32-bit OS, you won't. :( That is to say, you need a 64-bit OS to benefit from applying the LAA patch.

From memory, it's usually advised against. It apparently, at best, does nothing.

Sorry, I'm not sure what else to suggest. Cut down on AI abuse from some mods / addons...?

Are there any mods on that list that you know of that might need an update?

There is a way to use LAA on a 32-bit OS with some changes to the boot manager. Even if it doesnt work, its better to give it a shot than to have the game crash ridiculously often. I probably wont be playing oblivion anymore by the time I get a 64-bit OS.

Im turning the threading off because it doesnt seem to help. I also found a report that someone posted that gave some actual test results showing no benefit. OSR's hashtable resizing seems to help with performance, but idk if thats just a placebo effect lol.

Last time I changed settings for LAA in the boot manager, Punkbuster kept kicking me out of online games.
It would cause other problems too.

I would suggest against doing that, just get a 64Bit version of windows 7.

How long can you play before maxing out? I'm having a much weaker rig (1 GB RAM for one thing) and am using just about as many mods (plus RAEVWD) and can play perhaps 1,5 hours before getting issues (depends a bit on how many different cells that are loaded etc. of course).

Getting a 64-bit version of windows requires 64-bit hardware, so thats a no-go. I got this computer earlier this year, so Im not going to be replacing hardware anytime within the next few years. I dont need to actually apply LAA on any executables save for single-player RPGs. If I dont apply the patch, the executable shouldnt run any differently (and still should cap at 1.8 gb). 1.8 gb is much more than enough RAM for any my other games. As for the boot settings getting you kicked out of games, that may be caused by giving the system too little to work with. Other than the game Im playing, I usually have about 600mb-1gb of background RAM usage at any given time, so If I allocate 1.25-1.5gb to system, I think it should be enough, while still giving oblivion a few hundred more mb to work off of.

At worst, I had the game crash after less than an hour (however, it was an hour of running around from place to place for quests). My oblivion uses around 1 gb RAM when it starts up. You probably dont have as many resource-intense mods installed, resulting in less meshes/textures and stuff needing to be loaded. I think I probably have several gigabytes of mod content installed. I tried RAEVWD once, but all it did was cause horrible lag in exterior cells.

Buh? Whoever told you that... hasn't got their facts straight, basically.

The Q8300 is most certainly a 64-bit processor, and has Intel-64 or whatever it's called (pretty much the equivalent of the AMD64 thingie, IIRC).

And that's all that matters.

When I bought the computer, all of the upgrade options were 32-bit, so I assumed that there must be a reason for them not giving a 64-bit option. A guide somewhere also said to make sure that your hardware is compatible before trying to switch from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS. I just ordered the RAM upgrade, so if I can make it work when it arrives, then I shouldnt have to change anything else.

That is something I would strongly recommend against. Not only is that likely to make Oblivion even more unstable, it stand a good chance of giving your system BSOD problems. Using LAA on a 32-bit OS starves the drivers for kernel memory.

The mult-threading settings in the ini are nothing but ghosts. The game doesn't use them.

Actually they do. A 64-bit OS won't run without a 64-bit CPU. Which as you point out, he has, so Windows 7x64 is a viable option. With at least 6GB of memory, otherwise the LAA thing is still pretty pointless.

Sorry, yes. That's what I meant (to say). Even though seemingly I was responding to the quoted text (fair enough to assume!) I wasn't, precisely. But anyway, you get the gist. Actually, you summarised it, just fine. :)

I only have 2 slots for installing RAM on the computer, so 6 gb of RAM wont physically fit in my computer unless they start making individual chips that store 3 gb. The only concern I have about a 32-bit OS is that Ive heard from some sources that it can only address 4 gb of memory including video RAM. If thats true, then Im kinda screwed with my 1 gb video card. I dont exactly have permission to go buy a 64-bit OS and install it, so the best I can do right now is to see if the RAM upgrade helps any.
