Levelling without gaining a level?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:17 am

Alright I took a break from programming and decided to play DF since I wasn't hungry, and had the strangest thing happen. My last save in town shows me at lv6 with 210hp. I got a DB quest to kill an ex-member who was hiding in a dungeon. I get to the dungeon and beat down a group of mages, take their equipment to my wagon, then rest. When done resting it shows me the level-up screen, gave me six points to distribute, etc like normal. After I distributed my points, I checked my character screen and it says that I am still lv6, but now I have 241hp and my core stats are raised the way I distributed them. Is it possible that I did enough work on my misc stats that I was allowed to gain a level, but my primary, major, and minor stats equate to lv6? I've been working on jumping, running, archery, swimming, and climbing regularly, and they're all misc stats, but they're much higher than the other misc stats.

If not, what the heck caused this to happen? I never had this happen before that I was aware of.

Alright I just figured out part of it. I reloaded my save in town, the one before I accepted the quest, and took a screenshot of my character sheet, clearly showing me at lv6. I then accepted a mission from the DB, after being promoted, and upon arrival at the dungeon, I have about six or seven skill increases. I then checked my character sheet and I am at level five! What in the world is going on? I've never had this problem before, and none of my main skills are decreasing. I am about to get a video of this phenomenon, but until then, I have screenshots for you.

*EDIT*

Here's the video, although it may take a day or two to become public. This starts at the load game screen and goes through me getting a quest and arriving at the location of my target. Could this bug be caused because I have a sword that improves longblade skill?

Actually, the video is already up!

This is a new phenomenon to me. I have seen some odd behavior in the level-up protocols, but never anything like this.

That being said, I suspect (as you seem to as well) that it may be related to the presence of a skill-increasing item in your inventory. But how or why this has become an issue, I don't know. Ka-plah, and keep us informed.

Two things.

1) This happens even with the sword removed, so I deleted the game and started over since I only had the character a week
2) What is "Ka-plah"?

Myself, I would have saved that save-game pending some more input. So it goes.

Ka-plah is Klingon. Very loosely translated it means "good luck." I don't recall the exact translation, but knowing Klingons, it probably refers to blood-letting in some form or another.

Not a reference. I'm just worried about your soul is all...talking Klingon...hell, knowing Klingon...is a Sign. A Dire Portent. Is posting on this board another Sign? Perhaps. I believe there is a critical mass of Signs that lead to...Changes. Becomings. Things Unknown.

And before you ask how I knew, when I saw it, I just knew. It was the only thing that made sense. Google told me what you said.

It's not too late...
