Daggerfall Computer

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:11 am

Does anyone know how much it would cost to have a computer to run daggerfall? By this I mean buying an old computer not emulating on a new one.

Few hundred Dollars if you tried to get the parts, maybe 50 bucks if you know someone.

Well actually I thought of an even better question. Where the hell could I buy it outside of the internet?

I'm talking about buying a computer to run old games not using my current one...

If you have a decent computer, you can use DOSBox and emulate it without having to pay a cent. :)

Mine isn't decent at all, and I don't want to emulate.

I really have no idea. If you can find an old E-machine based around a Pentium-133, that'd be ideal. That was what I played it on most recently, and it ran better on that machine than on any other. The on board sound hardware even ran the infamous shop music really nicely.

So any idea where to buy them, or how much they may cost?

Actually, you may want to check ComputerGeeks website...I've seen a few old rigs on there from time to time that go pretty cheaply. Or you could build your own...

Anywhere you can get stuff used. Heck, these things are so old, you won't even find it on the resale market any more, probably. I'd try Ebay... though you did ask where to find something like that outside the internet. I really have no idea. Try hitting up the yard sales, I guess.

Find someone who just wants to give away an old computer, or check local yard sales. For Daggerfall I'd aim for a Pentium between 133mhz and 300mhz with 32MB of RAM, although beggars can't be choosers.

I actually have an old P166 I'll probably be giving away. If shipping weren't so expensive I'd offer it to you. It needs a few parts anyway.

I keep my old systems unless they're beyond repair or something, and I have a knack for running into deals. Would you believe a friend got an old IBM PS/1 system with everything original (monitor, desktop cpu, keyboard, mouse, and printer) and gave it to me just because he knew I'd like the antique? It's a 386/16 with 2MB of RAM!

Anyway, if you look around you can find anything. I have run Daggerfall on systems ranging from a P133 to a P3/800, and as long as you're running Windows 98SE and have an SB or Ensonique soundcard in the thing, you should be good to go. The game runs at 60fps maxed out on a P200, so anything more than that is just overkill.

*EDIT*

Forgot to mention, a P200 with 32MB of RAM. I noticed no performance gains between that system and my P3/800 with 512MB of RAM.

The pentium 3/800 is way too fast for daggerfall. Daggerfall starts to have serious speed problems with any CPU over 450mhz because it doesn't have a cpu speed limiter programed in it like modern games. Climbing, jumping and moving backwards just won't work. I have tested various cpu speeds on my old win98SE comp by down-clocking my pentium II 350 to 133,166 and 200mhz... and have found the ideal speed to be around 200mhz for Daggerfall, anything higher and climbing can start to get difficult.

Never happens to me. Next time I get the old P3/800 setup I'll tape Daggerfall running properly on it. I only had problems when I was toying with AMD processors due them being able to process more data per cycle than the P3 processors of that era.

Depending on what city you're in, I'd try http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites.html. Yeah, you'd need the Internet to access your local site, but not to buy or swap for something or pick up for free.
