The Enchanting System

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:04 pm

Hey guys, I just want want your opinion on this. One of the things that bothered me in Oblivion was how cruddy the enchanting system was compared to Morrowind in the fact that weapons and other things that had a certain charge on their enchantment would need to be re-charged using a mage or an enchanter. This meant that you'd get a limited amount of uses on the weapon, and when you ran out you'd have to spend a good 1000 or so bucks in order to re-charge the weapon. This usually wasn't worth it. It meant, for me, that I'd constantly be worrying when using my enchanted weapons (especially my good ones) because I didn't want the charge to run out and have to spend so much money.
Whereas, in Morrowind, you could just wait for your weapon to re-charge itself rather than worrying about being... charged for your weapon enchantment. For some reason, this made using enchanted weapons feel so much more comfortable to use in Morrowind, and rather than finding one and saying "Oh that's good and only has 64 uses, I better put this one away for a rainy day.." (or maybe that's just me) you can jump for joy and use it straight away. I found the time you had to wait to re-charge your weapon in MW was barely a liability.
Anyway, which system do you prefer? What would you rather see in Skyrim? Explain your answers if you can. :goodjob:

Keep in mind I haven't played the first two ES adventures, and I haven't played Oblivion in quite a while, so details could be sketchy.
Thanks all.

It should recharge like morrowind and you should be able to pay for it to recharge.

I don't understand. You want to have to only wait for it to re-charge, but also want the opportunity to pay? Why would you want to pay?
Oh, wait. Do you mean it should re-charge, but if you want an immediate full re-charge you can pay if you like, seeing as though it's much faster?

A combination of both Oblivion's and Morrowind's (would be good if you added that to the poll).
A basic recharging over time-thing.
And a few items and objects that can allow you to recharge an item instantly.

Prefer the Oblivion 'soul ammo' method myself, a lot of people have said it was a pain, but there were soul gems everywhere.

That sounds perfect to me

I always felt that Morrowind's enchanted items were cheap. Your fire-sword ran out of juice? Just take a nap and it will recharge itself.

In Oblivion I never payed to recharge my items, I always used soulgems.

A magic weapon has a max charge and every time you use it some of the charge is used. In Morrowind the weapon recharged over time, however if you use a strong effect in intensive combat it would run out, pretty fast. Ebony staffs or the swords from the guards in Tribunals required frequent recharge if maxed.
Also how much charge it draw depend on your enchant skill, if the skill is low you would empty it fast so weapon with powerful enchant would only give you a cople of hit as a novise.

In Oblivion you could pay for recharge but I never did that, Azura's star and umbra solves this problem.
In both games you could add soul trap to custom enchants or use a spell to trap souls.

Now I would want the recharge rate to be pretty low and constant, if you have a pretty weak enchant with fire damage 5 made with a grand soulgem you would not be runing out of charges often, a sword with absorb health+ paralyze would run of charge fast and would require frequent feeding if you used it often, might not even work right with to low enchant skill.

Other: Whatever BGS already have thought up ;) Given Enchanting is a skill, there must be perks associated with it. And only BGS at this point have an idea how to balance things out. I'm confident it won't be like we're used to from either game. Maybe all the way at the top of the perk tree, lies "Azura's Star Training", making it unavailable to all but the best enchanters ;)
