Need a beta tester for a lightning damage mod

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:05 pm

A user on another forum requested a mod that has a chance of causing lightning (shock) damage if you're traveling outside during a thunderstorm. Unfortunantly, he's not a very good tester and with working 12 hour days, I'm not much of one right now either. So I would like somebody that will download the mod and give me a report of what it's doing/not doing. Specifically, I need to know if the strikes are only occuring outside during a thunderstorm; if the customizable percentage chance of a strike is working properly (you can change the percent chance to be hit in game); and what the fps hit, if any, is. In the coming weeks, I'll be adding stuff to the mod that will be needing testing as well: right now the player gets hit during a strike but I'm working with Fliggery on making the strike zone random. Also, somebody sent me a mesh and texture for a lightning bolt that I'm going to be adding - I'll need to know if they show up in game as well as the thunder sound (provided I can find the wave file). If you're interested in testing and reporting back, you can find the current beta over on http://www.fliggerty.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=1885. Thanks in advance.

p.s. It may take me awhile to get back to anybody who responds due to my work schedule. Be patient with me, I will address any issues raised. Suggestions for additional features will take longer.

Indoors or outdoors?

Was it thundering? If not, what was the weather?

Did you try changing the percentage chance?

Outdoor.

Using a weather changing mod to get Thunder automatically (I change it indoor) I walk outside and BAM!

Nopper, I did not mess with it.

Nice to see you will be making use of the mesh & texture, will have to update it a bit I think it works for now I guess also this totally neglects me from including my own system for this in Hexagonica, which is excellent, for this all I will need to make are interiors that act like exteriors with only thunderstorm =)

Hope you get this [censored] thoroughly.

Cheers

Thanks. If you get a chance, try lowering the chance (if I forgot to mention how to do that, I'll post it later) and let me know if you still get hit right when you walk outside.

If ya referring to this:
The default chance of being hit is 20%. To change this chance, open up the console and type without quotes "Set shock_chance to ##" where ## is the percentage chance to be hit. Note that this number must be between 1 and 100.

I set 0, 10, 100, 1000 and all shock at the same time. Maybe I am doing it wrong.

Er, 20% seems a bit high for realistic lightning strikes. Hope it does about 5 damage at max, otherwise a 1 out of 5 chance is way too high.

On average, the chance for anyone to be hit by lightning in real life is about 1 in 83,930 at least. This is over your life time.
Now, then, maybe I'm a little confused about what all this mod does. Lightning strikes every so often, while realistic, we get the magnetic field from those, :) , but a 1 in 5 is a little high.

Feel free to correct me, nicely.

I agree make the chance really low cause in reality lightning strikes the tallest thing in an area which I know you can't emulate in this mod but you could kind of simulate that element of lightning striking taller things instead of you by making the percentage of getting struck real low.

To correct this a bit, lightning takes the path of least resistance, which will usually be the tallest object in an area, however, if the only object within the lightnings path that is taller than you is of a very high resistance, such as a brick building, or even a dead tree(note, green living trees have roughly the same resistance as human flesh, while dry/dead wood has a much higher resistance) then you might actually be the easiest, or least resistant path for the lightning to take. The static electricity in the air at all times acts almost exactly like that of a battery capacitor, it can charge and "store" an immense amount of energy, but the full charge of energy is released instantly(which is why there are warnings on the backs of televisions/various other electrical equipment/appliances about removing their panels).

Little known fact, most lightning actually originates from the ground and strikes towards the clouds, and nearly all of the remaining lightning occurs between clouds(due to high moisture friction which produces the negatively charged static during rainfall).

P.S. did I mention I'm a nerd.......and tend to ramble.....

I actually knew that about lightning, how what you see is mostly from the ground to the sky. :)

I also know it's responsible in some part to our magnetic field. In fact, if Lightning stopped striking for not even a long time, we'd lose it! :ooo:
And then we'd all be like this. :nuke:

The chance is set as it is because it was part of the original request. I tried to have a way to be able to adjust it on the fly, but it looks like that's not working. Qawsed Asap, thanks for testing this. It looks like I'll need to hardcode the chance for a strike in the scirpt itself. Do you mind doing some more testing after I do that? Thanks.

I have an idea as to how u can get it to strike randomly if ur interested read on,

However this method would only work if the lightning strike was an animation and under the activator tab

First in the script that will be used on the lightning activator
1)add some float vars (call them whatever) and use those vars to get the player's x,y, and z positions
2) Add 3 more float vars and have them be set to random (maybe random 300 - 500 or more if you need it)
3) Yet again create 3 more float vars and set them to the float vars that get the player's position + the random vars
4) And then set the object's position to the float vars in step 3
5) Add some lines to the script so that if the player is within a certain distance of the activator they get shocked
6) you'll also want to add a timer at the beginning of the script so that after say 2-3 seconds or after the animation is done the object is disabled and deleted and also add in a variable prerequiste to prevent the player from getting shocked after the lightning is gone just to be safe that there is no misfires of the script.

Thanks to Fligg, I think I figured out why the lightning struck so often. There's now a ten second delay between when it checks the chance for a strike before it checks again. This should prevent it from striking every few seconds unless the chance is set high. Here's a http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m313/gulfwulf/Morrowind%20pics/Lightningstrike.jpg of my test character being hit.

That doesn't really look like someone's being hit by a thunder. I don't think you'd be standing in place with apathetic face if thunder would hit you :P

Just joking ,anyway, this would be nice in areas with high thunderstorm value!

Well, it wouldn't be that way if MW's faces could show emotions. :meh:

It would make a good trap - could imagine dropping a few lightning activators and backing away as some berserker comes running towards me I could easily roleplay a surprised look on their faces as the shocks set in :) - was the requester happy with the end result?

Yes he was. I've had other suggestions/requests over at GHF, hence the reason for all of the beta testing. Regarding the suggestions: I can't guarantee any of them will be incorporated because I don't intend for this to be a massive mod. If they're easy for me to implement, then I'll add them when I'm able. I put in C_Mireneye's meshes and textures and the effect is pretty cool aside from the spark ball that shock causes. If I can test the mod without it crashing, I'll see about taking more screenshots. Qawsed Asap hasn't had any crashes with the latest version, so it could just have been something wrong with my system. Anyway, next up is a way to set predefined shock chances via a ring that will bring up a messagebox configuration screen when worn.
