No sound in The Elder Scrolls Arena (DOSBox)

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:01 pm

Hi, I have downloaded The Elder Scrolls Arena (freeware) on the official website, which has also a link to DOSBox.

I have followed all the instructions to make it work with DOSBox:

(In game install utility)

8. Select “Select Sound Card”. A list will appear. Select “Sound Blaster or SB16 (or compatible)”
9. Select “Select Music Card” and do the same.

Additional:
If you are having difficulty with the sound, or Arena fails to start but instead hangs at a black screen, likely you’ll need to match up what the emulator’s sound settings are and Arena’s configuration.

To do this, start the DOSbox emulator. When the emulator window opens, look at the lines of text within the window. One will say similar to:

“Z:\>SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T4”

Except I have exactly : "A220 I7 D1 M5 T6" if that matters.

I have tested all sound cards in game install utility and none of them gave me any sound.

Maybe I need to configure something in the emulator?

My specs:
Windows 7 x64 Pro
Intel Core2Quad Q6600
HD4870 X2 2BG
Creative SB X-Fi Fatality XtremeGamer Sound Card
4GB DDR3

Please help a newbie, I really want to play old elder scrolls games :'(

Thank you for your help Muzlibuck

I have successfully installed Arena and everything works fine except there is no sound.
I have selected all possible sound cards in install menu but none gave me any sound.

I don't understand that part of the guide:

You can change the music card in the Arena install program to "General Midi or MPU-401", and it will sound better. To easily get to the install menu, just start Arena with the above instructions and then exit the game and type INSTALL.

I don't see General Midi or MPU-401 anywhere in the install menu. Can you explain step by step how to switch to those? That might help.

Also it may work for you but we may have different sound card.
My sound card is in my specs above.

TIA

Nevermind, I just found "General Midi or MPU-401" and now music works. Problem solved... partially

now I have to learn how to swing a sword, I think I tried everything without success.
also do you think it is possible to change the keyboard config?

I don't think you can change the keyboard config. To swing a weapon hold down the right mouse button and move the mouse in any direction to control which way to swing the sword.

I don't understand what happened, after using "General Midi or MPU-401" I finally got sounds.
But now I launch the game with same sound settings and the sounds disappeared again.
Is it an emulator cursed bug?
