Cities Are Big But Not As Massive As We Think?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:31 pm

In a lot of the still shots from the trailer a lot of npc's can be seen but they are zoomed out and hard to identify. Some of us thought that was due to the massive scale of the cities and the npc's naturally looked smaller because of the big cities. That seems it may not be the case.

Someone asked Pete on twitter..." The trailer shows a lot of npc's but they are hard to identify. Result of massive scale and cities or just not showing npc's yet?"

Pete replied..." Right, more that we aren't showing NPCs yet. We know folks want to see their argonians, dark elves, etc"

So there you have it. The person followed up with " Ok thanks. Are you guys still working on the designs for beast races or are they finished and you guys are waiting to show them?" But Pete hasn't responded yet.

Did you see the cities in the trailer? (especially the one with the tower) They are massive.

That tweet doesn't say to me "cities are not massive" it says to me "we aren't showing all the races yet."

Well, just because the vagueness of the other NPCs are a result of Beth actively trying not to show them yet, it doesn't necessarily follow as a result that massive cities are not as massive.

But you could clearly see how big the cities were in comparison to the people. I think he was saying it was so zoomed out because they weren't trying to show the NPC's. It's not like they shrunk the NPC's just to make the cites look bigger.

thats not related to the size of the cities. just because intentions r different does not mean the scale is off. the scale is the same. wut he's saying is he doenst want to give us a better look becuz he has races running around that they dont wanna show us yet. so we only see from odd angles. but compared the size of that litle guy nobody noticed on the stairs in i think its claled markarth. that city is really big. and he looks like an ant most people dont even notice him. u cant change that kind of scale. they r just pretty much showing us angles where we dont see everyone.

I know cities are massive this is just to show that npc's weren't hard to identify because of the city size. More so because they aren't showing npc's yet. But why? Are they still working on the designs? They should be finished with at least the designs by now.

Have to agree with this. Those tweets don't say anything about the cities, unless I'm just reading them wrong. O.o

Have you seen some kind of epic aerial picture/video of the cities? Because all I saw was small parts of it.

That would be a devious plan.

In Oblivion they put huge tower in the middle of the imperial city to make it look bigger, so I wouldn't be that surprised. ^^

Misleading title then.

Anyway I bet they are going to do something special with the races. Maybe release a profile of each one, one per day for two weeks. Similar to how ME2 did with the classes. That would be pretty cool.

Probably because they don't want to give us all the information at once? That would be terrible marketing.

I'm reminded of the flyby of the Imperial City during Oblivion's intro. The camera is distant enough that your mind can't really separate each individual building from one another, and the lack of NPCs on the streets give the impression that it's just one big, nondescript metropolis. A really majestic first impression of the game until this one guard comes into view and you realize how huge he is in relation to the trees and everything else.

Want proof that the cities are massive? Pause the trailer at 1:12, and look in the bottom left corner. Just right of the bridge there is an NPC, look at him, then compare his size to that of the city.

Does this picture quell you concern? - http://oi51.tinypic.com/4schw7.jpg Notice the bottom left corner.

I reckon Bethesda has probably finalised the race design but are not revealing them just yet.

Also, I'm glad to see that there is more "vertical-ity" (for lack of a better word) to the cities.

Thats just guesswork don't start throwing around false rumors (if that makes any sense) we don't know how "massive" they will be and Imperial City in Oblivion was not "massive" in any sense of the word.

I don't care about the size of the cities (number of peoples, area, number of buildings). With too many buildings I just get confused by repeating building types.

I much prefer what I am seeing in the trailer, great world design with clear points of reference and fantastic views. But some of those buildings in the background look gigantic.

I thought massive cites meant geographical spread and number of buildings, not that each building is gigantic.

I thought it was weird Pete said " We know folks want to see their argonians, dark elves, etc".

I thought we spotted a few Dunmer in the trailer already?
