Arena Music in Daggerfall?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:52 pm

I'm aware that some music in Daggerfall was taken from Arena, but there are some tracks(specifically one of the inn themes and the store theme) that I would like to use in Daggerfall, but they aren't in Daggerfall, already. Is it possible and legal to get some of Arena's music to play in Daggerfall? I have both games downloaded from the Elder Scrolls website. If it is possible and legal, how may I do it? Also, if possible and legal, can I get rid of the sounds my horse makes without muting the game?

Hi Seti!

Interkarma cracked the audio formats for Daggerfall a while back - you can play and extract all sounds and music from the game using http://www.dfworkshop.net/?page_id=61. Maybe you already knew that, I don't know. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8516, the old failed attempt at creating a sourceport for the first Elder Scrolls game can also extract audio.

Here's the disappointing part. I don't think anyone knows how to replace sounds in Daggerfall, only graphics.

Since I can't replace the old ones, can I add new ones alongside the old ones?

Doubtful - since each song has an internal name I'm assuming that the game's locations are hard coded to call up certain ones.

Thinking about it again, replacing the old ones, could probably be done with a lot of work. The MIDI.BSA file inside the \ARENA2 directory, containing all of the game's songs, has a fairly comprehensible structure. If I recall correctly, if you open it with a hex editor the songs literally just come one after the other, with their internal names before the instrument data. I don't know much about translating a MIDI file into hex, but if you just managed to find the bits of a song the BSA file uses and find their equivalents in an Arena MIDI, you could probably swap them out. Not sure how it'd work out, though.
