"Shouts" as a means to Fast Travel in Skyrim

It's a good idea. Better than just "click on the map and time passes and you're there".
This has an actual explanation, which is nice I think.

Also:
F: You do not improve in any skills even though you are likely using them aplenty while you travel.

Good point, though you could make the argument that you walked or rode throughout your entire journey, and thus would not raise any skills.

G: You do not gain any loot -- no gold, nor crafted items, nor alchemical ingredients, nor potions -- that you would have otherwise acquired or created on your trip.

This point is arguable because it is not necessary to perform any of these actions to travel, even though you normally would if you were to avoid using FT.

dragon shouts can be obtained any time in the game u do not have to do main quest to get them

Dragons are random encounters, we don't know it they start at once or require some sort of trigger in the main quest like the oblivion gates in Oblivion.
However who shout you get appears pretty random, so you could get it very late.

Does anyone else find it comical when people complain about fast travel yet call for mark and recall to be brought back?

I find it funny, more so then multiple mark location mods was very popular in Morrowind.

If they drop fast travel they just have to give you a kick ass stronghold like the Televani stronghold in Morrowind.
Just like the Televani stronghold, it should require that you walk in five minutes to reach it.
Imagine how much they could sell a teleport to stronghold mod for on the xbox/ ps3 marketplace :)

yes and add some quests where you are sent to rescue somebody in a faraway dungeon, then you bring them back to town they thank you, give you 10 septims and tell you about a well hidden treasure in the dungeon you can go back and get :)

1. Silt Striders are indigenous to Vvardenfell, but some form of travel service would be nice to connect the major cities at least.

Dragon Shouts would be a great way to fast travel. So long as you can only travel to major land marks and cities. But then you have normal magic anyway.

only if the shout is the first one you learn, and right at the beginning. I don't want to play a third the way thru the main story just to fast travel

To be honest tho, without fast travel the game would get tedious real quick for most people

Actually, this makes a lot of sense.

I'm sure this is one of the first shouts you get from the graybeards once you get to the top of the mountain, so you can "travel down faster".

I would like it that the fast travel has a cool-down timer.

Thank you. That's exactly why I was thinking this would be a good idea.

That's one way to do it.

Yeah, it could be something you learn after you're freed, or made aware of your destiny, or whatever way to plan to have this adventure begin.

And I agree that it's tedious to not have FT. But maybe there could be a balance to it's use?

Yep.That sounds cool to learn it at the top of the mountain and then maybe they could have it so that you're trapped above, (think mountainside collapsed or something), and you can only get to ground level by Shouting to the bottom from where you have passed by before. That could serve as an introduction to this new power.

But you'd be for a cool down period, huh?

I think this sounds like a really cool idea.
And as aforementioned, I would like to see some restriction or similar to fast travel (granted this suggested way of FT isn't implemented.) For instance, after fast traveling, a screen, similar to those when leveling up/entering a new stage of vampirism of OP would appear after fast traveling. This would then sometimes penalize you in some way, based on distance traveled, area traveled through, etcetc, saying, for instance "You were attacked along the way, and lost X amount of potions and your armor took this amount of damage", of course also saying "everything went well" a lot of the time as well.

Just one small way of raising FT from being the mindless act of teleporting from place to place, to actually giving you a feeling of actually having "traveled" somewhere. Pardon me for my poor english by the way. Blabla I'm from Sweden etcetc :P

Yeah, that could be a interesting way of doing things. Having armor and such affected by doing it. Though I'm sure more than a few people wouldn't like that.

Oh, and your grammar is fine.

I have to say I'm a little surprised that so many people actually agree with me. I thought I'd be shut down quick lol

Thanks for being open guys.
