How does magic work in Oblivion?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:46 pm

I don't know if this question has been posted before(i am a noob :) ). I did a basic search of Magic Oblivion Mundus and did not come across any post that could quell by query.

While reading through the lore I came across description of Oblivion as below:-

Source :- http://www.imperial-library.info/pge3/

Everyone on Tamriel has had some brush with the Capricious Powers, whether it be in dream, or war, or at festival. Indeed, simply staring into the night sky is enough to visit Oblivion, for it begins where Mundus ends and surrounds those terminals on every side

Now if what I think of Mundus is correct then shouldn't the practice of various forms of Magic not work in any of the planes of Oblivion?
Please direct me to a satisfactory answer if it has already been presented before, and in that case please also close this thread.

Thanks in Advance

EDIT: How do I report a technical problem in forum? It seems starting a new topic while using rich text editor does not seem to work.

Magic has nothing to do with Mundus. It is external energy gathered from Aetherius. It is not subject to the rules of Mundus orOblivion, for their existence depends on it.

So why shouldn't work in Oblivion?

Well that is confusing for me. The same source also quotes this

Source: http://www.imperial-library.info/pge3/
Imperial Theosophy teaches us that our world was born from magicka, the creative force that informs and sustains all life. The sources of magic are the many and diverse heaves beyond the void, collectively known as the Aetherius.
Aetherius, ancestral seat of the Nine Divines and the other original spirits, is the plane of pure magicka. Whereas Oblivion may surround us every night, it is aetherial energy that infuses our daily existence, from highest to lowest, and gives all the races of men, mer, and beast common purpose. Its magic brings the rain to the fields, love to our hearths, and scientific principles to our technological industries. It gives us the very Sun itself. Finally, Aetherius is the home to the Aedra, those cornerstones of the Mundus whose aspects we see in the temple, in lordship, and the high walk of heroes.

Well my understanding of Mundus is/was it is some sort of basic fundamental rule/principal that governs the working of Nirn. And that it is because of Mundus that Magic is possible.

The very source you quote says: "The sources of magic are the many and diverse heaves beyond the void, collectively known as the Aetherius."

The sources of magic are collectively known as Aetherius.

The soure of magic is Aetherius.

It's not that Mundus makes Magic possible, it's that Magic makes Mundus possible.

Aetherius' magic filters down into both Oblivion and Mundus.

The PGE places such an emphasis on magic because Imperials are philosophically and spiritually aligned with Aetherius's order, at least more so than Oblivion's chaos. It is the origin of their Aedric deities.

Mundus owes its existence to Oblivion as well, however. Magic in isolation is inert, untapped potential. Essentially crystallized nothingness that is indistinguishable from the formless nothingness Oblivion's void.

PM Gstaff, but it is probably just a gap in forum software that they won't fix.
