The Paladin

Chrysamere is known as "The Paladin's Blade."

Who was The Paladin? Moriahus? The only mention of the term Paladin on the Imperial Library are of references to Chrysamere and an outdated lore piece from the Arena era known as "Go Blades!".

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Melus_Petilius from Oblivion was referred to as a Paladin although his in-game class was "Champion" which essentially operates very similarly to a dungeons and dragons Paladin archetype, with focus on melee combat and healing.

Is there any further lore, even obscure dev posts, referring to Paladins?

I think it means Paladin in a general sense, as in if you're a paladin then this is the blade for you.

But what's a paladin? Historically it was a name for a particular group of knights that served Charlamange. Then there's the D&D character class, which has never had an in-game TES equivalent. So what's a "paladin" in terms of The Elder Scrolls? Where does the term come from, other than out-game sources?

i think its just a special type of knight, a derivative of TES' DnD originins.

from wiki:
The Latin palatinus referred to an official of the Roman Emperor connected to the imperial palace on the Palatine Hill; over time this word came to refer to other high-level officials in the imperial and royal courts.

so i guess we could just say that paladins are high ranking, government related knights (like battlemages without the magic)

Well, it is the top rank in the "Imperial Knights" faction, was said to be in the possession of the Legion for many years, and when you confront Draramu Hloran about it he says that "You seek the Sword of the Paladins? And what makes you think you deserve it? Because you wear the Imperial crest?", so apparently it's closely associated with being of high rank in the Legion...

A Paladin is someone who belongs to the Knights of the Silver Hand which is located in the World of Azeroth on the continent of Lordearon. Apparently, someone had figured out how to make portals to other worlds.

LOL, a Paladin is just supposedly a Holy Knight in terms of most fantasy.

A Paladin is from my understanding much like a Crusader in that they are a chivalrous warrior who serves a deity. Most likely the Nine or a specific one of the nine. Probably Talos.

That's just guesswork. no evidence show's he wielded it.

I interpret "the Paladin's Blade" as "the blade of Paladins;" it seems more like a title of prestige rather than a attribution of ownership.

Interesting perspectives. I had all but forgotten that the top rank of the Imperial Knights was known as Paladin. Although no in-game character of that rank actually appears. In fact, to my knowledge no NPCs in either Morrowind or Oblivion are a part of the Imperial Knights faction, at least in the CS or game engine.

The reason I assumed it was Moriahus' blade is that Lord's Mail is supposedly his hide. Or am I confused? I could have sworn I read that somewhere but I may have it confused with the story about the Savior's Hide being Hircine's.

In reality a paladin was a a type of heavily armoured mounted warrior of very high standing, higher even than a knight.

Yeah I am aware of the real world origins as well as the fact that a highly ranked noble Imperial Knight is a Paladin in TES, but Chrysamere is known as "The Paladin's Blade" not "The Paladins' Blade". Only a subtle difference in spelling but a profound one in meaning. Singular. One Paladin known as The Paladin. It may have even belonged to Talos Stormcrown himself.
