References to The Elder Scrolls in other media

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 12:02 am

I was passing by the TV earlier while SyFy was on an something in the background of a Sanctuary ad caught my eye. When I watched it again I realized what it was; some hieroglyphs in the background of a scene were Daedric letters. Unfortunately the best screencap I could get was low quality from Youtube but you can see the Daedric letters E, C, and A on one of the larger sets with the letters from the font next to them for comparison http://i.imgur.com/IKdjZ.png. To the left in the ad in smaller sets were more Daedric letters upside down.

So that got me wondering if anyone else has seen references to games from the series anywhere else and I thought I'd post here.

Only TES reference I have seen was in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Vn9Tt2qmeM&feature=related (Jump to 2:10)

Oh, and I thought http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1166480-lady-gaga-is-sheogorathjyggalag/page__p__17175721__hl__lady+gaga__fromsearch__1#entry17175721 was pretty interesting.

It looks identical because it's the same exact font. :P

Surely the Oblivion 'O' is trademarked? It's right slap bang in the middle of that screenshot. Looks to me less like a reference and more like an outright rip.

It's called the SyFy channel - just look up 'The Asylum' on Wikipedia :P

And... no, I can't think of any references apart from in parody shows (like Doomsday Arcade). Kinda weird, surely it's popular enough?

Daedric is used on the signposts and on some other random surfaces in the iPad RPG Aralon, though it doesn't say anything that makes sense. I've also seen an Oblivion screenshot used as a background for a postcard on PostSecret.

That was the first thought that crossed my mind but I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe there are a few gamers on the crew that decided to throw in a reference when they were told to make the set pieces. After all Syfy does have a game publishing division, so I figured it would be weird to try and rip off a popular game considering the likelihood of gamers watching the show.

Is the daedric font made by Bethesda? Perhaps it found its way to one of those giant font archives, and the people using it don't know where it originally came from.

Bethesda did invent the Daedric font, but yes, you can download Daedric from a site like dafont. So that is a possibility.

It's not entirely relevant, but I swear I hear Morrowind noises everywhere - I know they're probably all stock, but whatever.

If you have last week's Doctor Who recorded (flesh p1), rewatch the bit where the Tardis crashes. And listen carefully.

Something in there reminds me of maybe an undead creature? Is that what you mean? Or maybe just ancestral tombs in general.

No - when the Tardis crashes, it makes a sound that is IDENTICAL to one in the Dwemer ruins. At around 5 minutes in here:

But it's a little faint on that video, for some reason.
