Magnificent Mountains

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:42 pm

I have just finished watching the trailer for about the 20th time, and I am noticing new detail every time. My most recent observation is from the last scene where the dragon flies away. Most of you have noticed the mountain directly in front, but I think I can make out the bank of a river at the bottom of the screen. After seeing how small this river looked I suddenly realized just how big the mountain actually was.... that thing is absolutely HUGE. If player speed is anything like Morrowind or Oblivion that thing will take forever to climb to the top of... but it will be well worth it for the view from that high up!

So far I am blown away with the scale and level of detail that Bethesda has put into this game! The fact that it does not come out till November is painful.

So my question from you guys is what is the most breathtaking image or realization that you gained from this trailer?

(BTW: this is my first ever topic on the forum and if I have done anything wrong I am sorry... I have not been here long)

Then I will make it my point to climb the mountain before I do anything else in the game... M'iag sounds like a very interesting fellow

That is my favorite scene in the trailer. Can someone post a screen grab of it maybe even high res and post it in this thread please? The fog in this scene is simply luscious and so too are those mountains!

I agree the mountains are beath taking and the low land clouds on them is a great way to view the unloaded textures without seeing every flaw as in oblivion distance mountains were easy to pick out flaws and looked more like big mounds of dirt, as for other beautiful scenes, the town view with the mountains hanging over it was quite impressive looking and with a character in view you get a feel for really how big these towns in the game really are, and also the view beyond the wind mill, with the elbow like ridge and a castle or church on top was really breath taking, this game is really looking good and i can say bethesda always out does themselves with the elder scrolls series, heres to more beautiful and enjoyable times to come in future elder scrolls games, thank you bethesda for really crafting a great game everytime for the fans and new comers of the series

I thought the mountains look great, and really "mountainous". Many times in games, they end up looking large large hills, but these are clearly mountains. The only problem I see, is they look really steep. Since the game area is the same size as Oblivion and most of the mountains look impassable, I think it will create a lot of running around the mountains, and decrease the actual playable size. I also noticed that they look drastically different between when you compare the shot at the end of the trailer (along with the high res screen of the mountains), to the mountains that you can actually see in the background of the gameplay shots. It's like the high res ones are from PC, and the others must be from 360 since they look much more like Oblvions. Guess we will have to wait and see which it is...

According to Bethesda the gameplay trailer was rendered on the xbox 360, nothing mentioned about the PC and for them to render on two different formats in one scene is hard and misleading, I believe wat your seeing is a cloud texture used on distance mountains which makes the distant mountains look more real and its harder to see the flaws of the distant textures in the game, it's a genuis idea for the game making it more beautiful for a take of the scenerey. If you watch all the mountains threw the whole trailer you might notice that most far mountains and rock formations seemed to be covered with a pretty haze or fog and clouds.

I'm super excited about the Mountains that we've seen so far in Skyrim; they look amazing. I especially love the huge jagged rock jutting out of the mountain forming a natural bridge over the water and then reaching back into the sea. That looks really awesome. I can't wait to jump off. 0.o

The mountains definitely look much more impressive than the ones in past games if the video and screenshots are anything to go by, and that's a good thing since we're going to be seeing a lot of them, climbing them certainly won't be easy, but I think Bethesda will put paths over or up them, at least some of them, since they've said that every place you can see within the map is accessable.

If there are really 7k steps to the Throat of the World, it's going to take a long time to climb. How many steps can you take in a minute?

My thoughts exactly.

I don't want the Oblivion-hill game of running up/sideways while looking for vegetation that indicates footholds, sliding down to rocks to jump over, working your way laterally thirty yards to gain ten feet in elevation, repeat. Definitely not my favorite part of trekking the country side.

Alternately, I guess we could go MW-style and randomly get stuck in crevices that are impossible to get out of without swimming through lava.. haha.

I like how the mountains look, but I have this one worry eating at me. Todd has said the map size is about the same as Oblivion's. With mountains that feel like real mountains, that would seem to indicate that things are being stretched vertically, but not horizontally. I have this worry about how that might impact the space between the mountains and movement on and around the mountains. Even though the map is the same size, in reality will there be less area because more of it is inaccessible due to steep slopes?

I remember making my own roads with acrobatics on morrowind and oblivion lol there's no stopping a Kahjiit, unless you slap some slave bracers on him and stick him in a locked wooden cell (go free Kahjiit... ok just stand here like your still a slave the whole game lol (morrowind))

If you climb it 2 steps a second, it would take almost an hour to climb. So in-game you're probably going to run up the mountain, so I say about 15 minutes to reach the top of the 7000 steps.

Remember the new run feature lets say 7.5 minutes to meet in the middle lol

You know, maybe some sort of mountain climbing mechanic is the big secret they are saving . . .
