New Modelling Question for 3DS Max

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:53 am

I've been googling and trying for a while now but I can't seem to find anything in 3DS Max about how to align an edge of one object with the axis or edge of another. I have one object with an unknown gradient and I don't want to align it by eye. All I want to do is click on its edge, click on an operator and then click on the object to be aligned's edge/axis. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I'd just use grid-snap. :shrugs:

Thanks but as far as I know that only works when you want the cursor to snap to an object/grid point. I need to have a whole object that I am currently moving to snap to another object's edge's/verticies/grid points.

Actually, I just tried snap-to-grid in max 4.2 and max 9 and it will work in max 9 but not in max 4.2. Does anyone know if max 4.2 can have this feature turned on as I don't want to have to use max 9 as I've had conversion issues with it before.

I'm not sure if there is such a feature but there is a workaround (given that you're willing to do some math). Basically, you need to create a point at the object's surface. Say you have a 10x10x10 box and you want a 5x5x5 box (center of a surface for this purpose) to align to one of the corners of the former. Get the coordinates of that corner, in this case at P = (10, 10, 10). Now for this purpose we need to figure out the center of the surface center of the latter box ( A = [2.5, 2.5, 5]). Create a point at A and link the latter box to that point. Then move that point to P and unhide all objects. The problem here is now getting the right angle that you want. This can be done either by hand or mathematically. In this example I did it by hand and got http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/4034/align.jpg.
