Unable to make new land?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:45 pm

Hey all,
I was hoping someone here might be able to help me with a problem that's driving me nuts...I want to make a small island for my character, but the problem is that I can't raise/edit land outside of that which already exists. I've tried changing the edit radius, the edit falloff %, tried with both boxes ticked/unticked, and I still can't raise or lower the land in the wilderness. I think I may have broken CS  (I'm a noob modder)...If you help me, I will give you all the fishysticks in the world and my undying gratitude :D

To raise and lower terrain, both the Flatten Vertices and Soften Vertices boxes should be unchecked. The Edit Colors box should also be unchecked.

Not sure if yours is the same problem, but whenever my Landscape Editor doesn't work (raising/lowering terrain or adding textures), it's always because I am near the cutoff of the loaded cells. To my knowledge, the CS can only load a certain number of cells at a time to work on, and when you try to use the Landscape Editor in cells near the cutoff, it doesn't work. Everything else does, but you can't do anything with terrain or textures.

If you hit the "B" key, it will toggle on/off your cell grid lines (yellow dashed lines). Pan over a cell or two in each direction to see if the world suddenly cuts off at one of the grid lines, leaving only a blue-gray void on the other side. IF this is your problem, you should see that cutoff somewhere near where you are trying to raise the land. If not, then this may be something else. Might be worth a try to see if it is.

If it is, you have to force the CS to load the cells beyond the cutoff. My somewhat crude solution is to drag some object from an adjacent visible cell - preferably something big, like a tree - past the cutoff and into the void area, which forces those cells to load (sometimes takes several seconds). Then alt-Z (or click undo) to move the object back to its original location. Once the adjacent cells are loaded, you should be able to use the Landscape Editor in the location you want. If you are in the middle of nowhere and there are no objects to drag, you will have to add something first (e.g. a tree) and then drag that. Just don't forget to delete it after the other cells load. I'm sure there's a more elegant (maybe easier) way of doing this, but this method always works for me.

Another more elegant method is just to aim in the direction of said void and scroll-wheel towards it. A bit slower but it works without causing dirty references.

I don't think that's the problem...I can't even raise/lower land that already exists apparently...the only thing I can do is flatten/soften verticles and place objects...I've tried with all 3 boxes unticked, but that didn't do anything. Also, I don't know if this is related or not, but I tried creating a Seyda Neen house the other day and that went fine, but when I went in-game and tried sleeping for the first time, the Dark Brotherhood Assassin didn't try to attack me...hell, he didn't even appear until I disabled the house mod and started a new game, although, even then he didn't appear till like the third time of sleeping. I really am convinced that I broke the CS D=

How far in are you supposed to scroll? I tried this but couldn't trigger the adjacent cells to load? I kept scrolling further into the void space to the point where I got lost... Is there a trick to it? My mod is 4 cells wide by 6 cells long, so the entire landmass is never all loaded at once, and having to load adjacent cells has been a constant issue for me. So if the scroll wheel (or any other method) is a better way, I'd like to learn how to do it.

I figured it out in the end, the "land sensitivity multiplier" in the CS preferences was set to zero instead of its rightful value of 1.00

The only other thing I can think of is if your Land Sensitivity Multiplier under Preferences is set too low. You might try setting that to a higher number and see if that works.

The DB assassin does not attack every time you sleep... it's random. Sometimes I have to sleep quite a few times in a row before they appear; other times, it's 3-4 times in a row they attack. But I doubt the two are related.

Edit: Sorry, Cathartis beat me to it! Glad you figured out the problem!

The cells automatically load when I scroll off into the distance.

@OP: Glad to hear you figured it out! It's always something trivial.

Hmm. Mine doesn't do that. I wonder why that is? I will mess around with it a bit more. Thanks.
