The language of the Nords

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:17 pm

I just read the locked thread "to all sweeds", where the author points to Dovahkiin's dragonshout sounding like the sweedish sentence "du ska d?" (You shall die). Listening to it again, I have to agree totally. Now off course, if you study the dragon language at UESP, you understand that this is probably a coincidence. Still it made me wonder how much of the language and words of the Nords will be anglizied norwegian or swedish. In the Bloodmoon expansion, there where several instances of Norwegian, the most notable being the creature Udyrfrykte (meaning the "beast" and "fear" in norwegian. This also makes me wonder if the dragonshouts maybe be put together in a way that gives the sound (although not the writing) meaning in one of the scandinavian languages, and hence "du ska d?" not a coincidence. Really looking forward to play the game and compare the language of the Nords and the sounding of the dragonshouts to sweedish, norwegian, danish or icelandic.

Well, maybe... I didnt think about that earlier. As a Norwegian, I have to admit it sounds a little bit like it, yeah.

How is that 'do' pronounced phonetically... is it 'dah'??

Anyway I went back to the G.I website when I first heard it to try and figure out what he said. From the list of words(which is probably not a complete list), the closest sensible translation from the sound and animation that I could find was 'Nust Lost Krah', which when translated means 'They Have Cold'. It kind of makes sense since the shout is an icy blue swirl and before the camera flies away, the dragon seems to ball up a little bit and stop moving.

If you are thinking of the word "d?", the vocal is pronouced like the "u" in burn, sometimes with a mix of a long Aa.

First you say the 'd' and then the vowel '?' is pronounced same way as the vowel in english words 'sir' or 'her'. You see we have an own letter for that phone. :) In english you just put some other vowel to replace it, like 'i' or 'e'.

I think its more logical in a language that you pronounce same letters always the same way and not like in english or french where you pronounce same letters different way in different words and sometimes don't pronounce them at all.

Had to check the trailer again, and again, and again... And I must say that the resemblance to the phrase 'du ska d?' is an amazing coincidence.

I seem to recall that hearing the shout for the first time I did think of some Scandinavian phrase, can't remember which one though.
