Politics in Skyrim

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:45 pm

Since I loved the political aspect of Morrowind, I hope that it comes back in Skyrim. It IS a civil war after all! Politics should matter just as much as dragons if this is occurring during a civil war.

There would obviously be many types of people in Skyrim, which amounts to even more types of beliefs. Since the main politics in Morrowind weren't...Really all that interesting in the sense of disposition, adventure, consequences, quests, and rewards; I hope to see Skyrim with a much more fluent system.

Since it is confirmed that the Dark Brotherhood is coming back, and that the Fighters Guild and Mages Guild are theoretically confirmed because of the references of all the Fighters and Mages guilds throughout Tamriel, as well as all the new Guilds/Factions that Todd mentioned they would be adding: This game should be politically heavy.

ALSO:

No bribing faction leaders to let you get in the guild immediately.

No bribing rival faction leaders to like you even though your rivals.

Politics in Skyrim:

The competitors will grab their mead mugs, empty them in one go and shout at each other. Then they'll run outside and one hour later, the debate will be won by the nord who can present the biggest and ugliest monster head smashed onto the dining table.

Ohh I love Skyrim <3

Yes, but more in depth than Morrowind. The hero's ascension in one (only one per playthrough) house should be a long (and I mean long!) and difficult way. Many choices to be made, choices that will eventually trigger different consequences later in the game, when you can't use save/load to see what would happen if... this is a great asset for a mature story and replayability. Also, the houses shouldn't be so eager to welcome you, a complete stranger and ex-convict until you have proved your loyalty in many ways. Politics should feature all the imaginable things that make the story interesting: twists, espionage, treachery, people that you must persuade (or frame, or kill, or blackmail) to clear your way up the ranks. Once you get in a high politics position, there should be new challenges: rivals that want to take your place and are trying to get you killed or slandered, quests that let you manage your house's relations with other houses by diplomacy, economic damage, assassinations or even open war. I want the different houses' influence zones on the map to be organic and changing. Once you get influence in an area or settlement, you'll be occasionally called to defend it, and that might not necessarily imply using force.

Yes, politics are important for me and I loved the great houses system in Morrowind. I want it back and improved. The Nords being more warriorish by nature doesn't exclude politics at all. The people may be as primitive as it gets, they always have leaders that do more than eat, sleep, drink and fight.

Yes please - I hope there are rival political factions, so you can't belong to both/all of them and each is unique. It would also be cool if NPCs had political beliefs and affiliations - so maybe some would like or dislike you depending on how you acted with regards to political decisions. Also would like to see political pamphlets/propaganda floating about - it would be good to be able to see the pros, cons, and motivations behind each movement, instead of there just being a "good" and "bad" side.

1000% agree, the political feel of Morrowind was one of the strongest points for me. Religion should play a big role too, and usually goes hand in hand with politics and civil war. I also expect some very memorable and fully fleshed characters involved in the politics plot. The Imperial City was a missed opportunity for me because I expected a lot of high placed people trying to profit from the political instability and trying to lure me into their intricate schemes.

Politics is a golden area for Bethedia to explore, and they have so much opportunity to score big with it. A civil war means a constant feel of depth, two sides, two stories, two goals. After FONV i'm convinced multi-story endings in modern games are do-able, and i think Bethedia has a real chance to hit a home run with the civil war.

I voted "depends" because im what some might call stupid lol and I'm sure theirs more like me out their (no offence).

When it comes to politics in games it can make it more realistic and fun for others, but for people like me it just makes everything too confusing and I end up making decisions that I later regret which just ruins the game for me!

So I think if they make politics a big part of the game, they need to be carefull how they go about it,
taking into consideration their targeted audience... is it something that will add to the game? or jut take away?

We need liberals, fascists, communism and conservatism translated into fantasy.

Well politics aren't that hard to grasp, don't pick anything you wouldn't pick in real life, just pick on what you think is wrong or right.

Well, while your self-irony is disarming :D I'd be curious to know what were the games where you made decisions that ruined the game for you. Ruined it how? As far as I can see, making decisions will only take you to one of the multiple paths the game has prepared for you. If you don't like the outcome, you can always replay the game and take the other "side". In the end you see two (more or less) different stories, what could possibly be wrong about that? I think having choices and consequences with good impact in the game world and/or story is nothing to be afraid of, it's just making the game richer and more replayable.
