finally got Oblivion for PC

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:52 pm

Hello there everyone :)

Well I finally got a laptop powerful enough to run oblivion. So I brough Oblivion, Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine and the horse armor addon.

So my question to you - is what now?

What patches do I install?

Also, while I am here I might as well ask - What are the reconmended mods?

I always like playing stealth/mage charcter so the mages guild and the dark brotherhood were always guilds that I played on the 360.

So what mods are there for this type of character?

I am essentially looking for spell mods, transforming into something, flying etc... plus any cool stealthy mods

Also while I am on the subject - my favorite part of the game are the Ayleid Ruins - so anything to expand upon them or add anything Ayleid to the game would be nice :)

Now I am veteren player and modder of morrowind BUT please treat me as a newbie for oblivion,

that is all.

Check the stickied Mods FAQ at the top of this forum. As in, read all of it (or all that you don't already know, perhaps...)

Then, if it appeals, go through http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/ for further advice, suggestions and just plain solid information.

You can search texnexus.com in a variety of ways. Getting to know them, and using them, can yield most mods you'll ever need. A few only exist at other places, such as tesalliance or planetelderscrolls - you can search those too. TESA, you'd need to sign up for. A few more sites have specific mods, such as Oblivion Real Estate (Google for the link, as always).

Use the Mod Detectives thread (should always be found in the first few pages of threads) for questions about particular mods (or types of mod) you're after - that's what the thread exists for. Not telling you off - you mightn't have known, for starters. But it's very convenient to use, and people might respond more, or more helpfully, there (than in individual threads each time).

Scanning the first, say, dozen pages - or more! - here for current mod [RelZ] threads (i.e., full releases) can be very useful, when not familiar with what's around / popular. Plus, some of them lead to other, related mods. Maybe try that too.

Using BOSS and Wrye Bash is *highly* advisable. Well, it is by me, anyway. :P

Good luck, and happy gaming! :)

There are some good suggestions here.

Since you're a magic user who likes Ayleid ruins, you might like http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16316.

Alas, I play heavily armored melee charaters who rely on magic as little as possible (though don't shun it when needed) so don't have a lot of input as to specific mod recommendations for a sneaky magic slinger. I will, however, second the endorsemant of Ayleid Steps. It's a very nice quest-centric mod and sounds right up your alley.

Aesthetic wise, there are three mods (or types of mods) I highly recommend to improve nighttime Tamrielic adventuring:

  • First up is Animated Window Lighting System & Chimneys which, as the name implies, makes the majority of the game's structure windows light up at night and during inclimate weather. It offers a lot of installation options, but comes BAIN ready and has OMOD conversion, so will be easy to install once either of those utilities is mastered.
  • Second, to make nighttime travel/questing more realistic and challenging, I recommend a nighttime sky darkener. The one I use is OC_darker_nights, but there are others. I believe some if not all the big weather mods offer sky darking options too. I like OC_darker_nights because it's small and simple and I've not yet felt a overriding desire for a full-fledged weather mod.
  • Third, with evening skies now suitably dark (thus showing off those lighted windows to advantage), use of a torch becomes more essential. DropLit-Torches_OBSE (which requires the OBSE utility, as do many Oblivion mods) fits the bill perfectly. It makes torch usage practical by providing a hotkey ("0" by default, but changeable) to draw or store them. No more opening your inventory each time a torch is needed. Another advantage, when holding a torch then drawing your weapon, the torch falls to the ground still lit, providing excellent illumination for combat whether outdoors at night or in a darkened interior.

Back to Ayleids. AFK_Weye, besides being a well made quest-centric mod that also adds visual appeal to the Weye area (and provides a very nice home for your avatar after completing several quest stages), contains one Ayleid-specific dungeon-crawl quest. There's also An-Arane Cey - Lost Sword of the Ayleids, another excellent quest-centric mod. It has a VERY challenging final confrontation. The reward sword is worth the effort. In fact I sometimes feel it's a bit too uber, which hasn't stopped me from wielding it. Still, I recommend not completing to quest until you finish all the vanilla/KoTN/SI stuff so as not to make things too easy. (A downside, in my opinion the sword is geared more for a melee character rather than the stealthy mages you prefer.)

A good general quest-mod recommendation is Kragenir's Death Quest which, amongst other things, will give you ample reason to visit (or re-visit) almost every nook-and-cranny of Cyrodiil.

You say you would like good spell and stealth mods.... So:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12466 is a magic overhaul and works well with LAME. A spell allows you to fly.
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=31908..... His name tells everything :)
Of course OOO is a must-have mod and MMM worths really much.
If you like Ayleid Ruins you really should try Ayleid Steps, like Aliotroph? said, and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=29931, a good addition to Ayleid ruins.
Don't forget about http://www.lostspires.com/pages/downloads.htm... It's (in my opinion) the best quest mod out there.

Enjoy^^

For your stealthy characters, you might be interested in http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8043 and http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8357 by Dimitri Mezieres. A good one for weapons and armor in general is http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18417 by Trollf and Team Arma. http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7819 is good if you want companions (although you still won't find Im-leet or Rolf the Uber :P ). If you want more inventory space, try http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4065 by Quazzy or http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27918 by me (bag of holding is better imo).
