Please help me enjoy sneaking

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:55 am

I picked Sneak as a minor skill. I forgot how much I didn't enjoy sneaking in Morrowind. I had a blast sneaking in Oblivion. So is there a way I can enjoy sneaking in Morrowind to make it more fun?

You do have the patch that makes your sneak button lock? I just installed it and it makes sneaking a lot better.
Instead of walking to regain your fatigue, sneak. It's about the same as going from a run to a walk. So now
besides gaining back your fatique, you can build on your skill. And the sneak meter kinda lets you know
somethings close.

Yes I do have that patch that locks the sneak. One of the greatest things. I am still not having as much fun though. I have to get Oblivion out of me, I guess I am failing my sneak since I am what, 15 right now. I think I will have to go to that diplomat in Sedya Neen and train it up a bit, if I can afford it.

Train it to a high level and you can enjoy getting a free hit, I think even a "critical".
Or if there's this guy you seriously hate and don't want to knock him on his butt and get arrested, you can rob him.

I think it's for people that can't take a hit like the walking brick houses can.

At a level under, like, 50 it's useless though. You can't fool anything. And if you can't sucessfully do that you don't get XP. Basically you need to pay a trainer for the earlier levels.

Mannperson is right, your level is too low to effectively sneak (though I say you can actually practice yourself at 25+ skill). You could do it the hard way and camp behind Scribs for a couple of hours, or you could pay for training. You really have to start high in sneak to use it without spending money, which was changed in Oblivion.

Drink :celebration:

Low sneak skill should be used just to get into better combat situation. (Oh, theres an enemy, i'll sneak around to the top of that mountain so ive got a head start peppering him with arrows before he can get to me).

High sneak skill should be used for profitsss :goodjob:

I admit that sneaking is the only thing that is better in Oblivion..

Sneaking, and thievery in general, in Morrowind is kind of broken. It's so much better in Oblivion.
I'd suggest just sticking with it, it gets a little more fun at higher levels.

Useing invisiblity or a high powered chameleon spell while sneaking helps to level up your sneak from a low level.

At 100 sneak, things will still find you when you get in melee range (But I don't use enchantments). But as noted, it can still be considered a 'free hit'. Since many enemies use ranged spells, it's very helpful to get the first hit in.
I play a thief/assassin and I love it. It's a bit more challenging than Oblivion's system, though.

It was, but the rewards were never very good. Breaking into a secret bank vault only to find the army of guards were protecting a spoon was disappointing.
Though it was a very good spoon in its defense.

Anyways, if you want to mod in some better sneaking, simply open the CS, load up Morrowind, and under 'Character' and 'Skills' find Sneak.

See the value that says 'Avoid Notice' and the use value? Ramp it up, 2-1 or whatever.

Ta-da, you're a much better sneaker.

Well, sneaking is good if you want to avoid notice but not have to use any potions, spells, or cheats. It really pays off later in the game, because then you can stand right in front of someone and they won't even notice. The thing is, though, if you either don't buy your levels for sneaking or you start with a really low sneak level, it's really hard to train you level. To me, Morrowind is all about patience. Unfortunately, I have none.

Without knowing your char, it's hard to say, but advice I got when I started playing was don't wear much armor especially Heavy or Medium. My first chars usually went barefoot of at least in shoes instead of boots. It seemed to help.
Take advantage of shadows and obstructions to hide and move slowly and incrementally. Don't try to sneak across well-lit wide-open spaces. At a low skill level you probably won't get away with it.
Caves and dungeons are good places to sneak. My chars usually gain 3 or 4 skill lvls in the Urshilaku Burial no matter unstealthy they seem to be.
Race also seems to help. This skill was designed with Bosmers and Khajiits in mind and they're really good.
You might make Sneak a major instead of minor and increasing the skill level won't be quite so frustrating.
I can understand your frustration after Oblivion. Skills there are almost impossible to fail at.
Right now my MW char is a Nord with mixed Heavy/unarmored armor skills ( a no-no to most people) She also wears light armor boots. She has Sneak as a Minor and is probably the most unlikely Stealth char you could conceive of. But we just blundered through and she's gotten pretty good at it. (We still don't push our luck at pickpocketting.)
If all else fails join the Thieves Guild and train up a little.

If I remember correctly, the sneak penalty of boots depends on their weight. I always wait until I reach a high sneak level before using boots/shoes. Anyway, combined with archery I think sneaking is a lot of fun.

Good point!
The difference in Sneak or any other skill in OB and MW is that the skills in MW are pretty much random and they'remore regulated in OB. I enjoyed OB for that reason but after playing OB's Main Quest a few times, I found that I didn't relate to my chars as much as I do in MW. But that's my style. (Better RPing in MW.)
