Why I don't think Bethseda should make a TES MMO

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:00 pm

Well, I've heard rumors that TES: V will be an MMO, but I don't think they should turn it into one. Here are my reasons:

1. I think it will ruin the RPG part of the game. WOW and all the other MMOs can pretend to be RPGs as much as they want to, but they never really are. If you go into any MMO, you will never really get to role-play because there are specific "builds" that you are supposed to use. For example if you wanted to play a rouge that had turned to shaman magic, and had shaman gear, you would not get invited to raids because you did not "build" you character they way you were supposed to.

2. The added other players would take away the freedom in the game. In Elder Scrolls the thing I like most is the freedom you have to do whatever you want to. If there were other players you would not be able to do this because of preserving the "game balance." I think it would also take away the freedom to make your own class, and also take away all the mods.

3. It would dumb down the game. Making a MMO would bring in a lot of players new to TES, and therefore they would most likely dumb down the game with designated "starting areas" in which you can not do anything interesting.

These are just my reasons. Does anyone else have any comments on the subject?

I would estimate that there may be a 7% chance of it ever happening. It would be simply too illogical for TES. Yet who knows, they may do it as a permanent source of income or some side project.

Here's what I found on UESP:

"Return of the MMO Rumors — January 20th 2010
Renewed rumors of an MMO Elder Scrolls game have appeared via VG247. They claim to be "very reliably informed", and quote an anonymous source as saying that not only is ZeniMax Media working on an Elder Scrolls MMO, but also that the game will be revealed shortly. This isn't surprising; ZeniMax doesn't have any other well known IP suitable for an MMO besides the Elder Scrolls series, and ZeniMax Online Studios hasn't announced that they're working on anything since their creation in August of 2007."

I guess it said ZeniMax, not Bethesda. There's also rumors of a wii game.

Wrong forum, maybe this should go into other TES games.

But since it's here now, where did you get this rumour that TES V would be a MMO? Also I know what MMO is, but what does is stand for again?

The Elder Scrolls Series is a brilliant RPG for Single Player Experience, An Online Elder Scrolls game would be good, but don't make it part of the Main Series.
I hope that if they do make an TES Online that its a totally different game, Maybe a game based on fighting other players in an Arena or something similar, But not the main series!

MMO is short for MMORPG which means: Massivly Multi Online Role Playing Game

anyway, i would love a mmo. but what i do love about other games like morrowind is you do not have to atend in a "race" just to be the best, you get a sense of freedom to do what you want and when you want and dont have to rely on other people to do certain parts of the game. (sure you do, but the npcs are they so you dont have to wait for hours to find the person to help) also as the OP said in TES game you can be a mixed class, eg. warrior with spells etc, and can buily how YOU want, and there is alot more veriety.

but a mmo would be good.

Also one of my favorite part of TES games is walking around with a high level character knowing nothing can hurt you with your amazing armour enchanted weapons and high skills. An mmo would ruin this as you would be constantly be ambushed by higher level characters with 100% chameleon so you cant see them to fight them back. I would just prefer TES 5 to have a mode where you could invite up to 3 friends to join u in doing a quest or going on a rampage or maybe just exploring.

Technically speaking, MMO stands for "Massively Multiplayer Online" and normally involves a persistent community and servers. MMORPGs are a sub-genre.

I agree with BrianC101 on this one. An MMO wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, but they would need to pull off a Final Fantasy 13/14 here in the sense that they would need to announce two completely different games simultaneously. The single-player experience is what we want out of the TES series, the rest is merely a bonus and should only be considered as such.

I'm more interested in a TES with co-op. I don't need the MMO, just give me a game where I can play with 1 or 2 friends.

I got other games to fill in my MMO needs, I don't need a watered-down TES to piss me off. The LAST thing I want to do is associate grinding with TES... believe what you will, you CANNOT have an MMO without grinding.

A new TES from Bethesda Game Studios will be a single player game. Whether there will ever be a TES MMO of any description is not known, if there is it will probably come from Zenimax On Line Studios. Personally I hope there won't be, but if you want to continue the discussion, please do so in this thread.
