30 Days of Night. This is when vampires were cool and did not sparkle in the sun.

The Hunger Games. It's an awesome book (and series), and very easy to get into, as long as you don't mind present tense writing. Everyone I know who has read it has absolutely loved it.

Ender's Game & Speaker for the Dead (sci-fi; the first time I really liked sci-fi)
Do Andriods Dream of Electric Sheep (sci-fi/apocalyptic/cyberpunk)

Forgot about those, good stuff.

I bet Neuromancer would be a great book too, if only the book had annotations of the made up technical words Gibson uses.

Can't believe I didn't think of this earlier: http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/search?searchTerm=Larry+Correia&search=search. Monster Hunter International is a great place to start.

Expand that to John Wydnham books in general. Very good author.

I was going to risk saying that, but I've only read Triffids and "The Chyrsalids", both excellent books though.

Somebody suggested Do Androids, but I'd say stay away from P.K dike until you've got into reading a little bit more. I love the man myself, but I know his books can baffle some people.

Reading Neuromancer for the first time (I think I was around OP's age) thoroughly confused me, so I didn't bother recommending it. The atmosphere in it is is amazing, though.
