Mod managing tools for Skyrim?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:29 am

Has there been any word on what sort of mod list manager Skyrim will have? TES games are so heavily supported by modders and mod users that there really needs to be more built in support for it.

Since OBMM and Wrye Bash are basically required to do any amount of modding with Oblivion(merging lists, .BSA packing, changing load order, etc.) I think we need more than just the Editor.

Not that Im worried that wonderful tools like Wrye or OBMM wont be around for Skyrim, but if that kind of thing is built in there would be a lot more synergy with the tools like the Editor defaulting to making a .BSA and putting it in an Archive by default.

Just my thoughts. Im not really a modder myself but I imagine having these tools out of the box would go a long way for people modding in Skyrim.

There is no point in even thinking about such things until the game comes out. Although slim, there is a chance that things will work differently with the new engine. I'm sure that if it works the same, it won't take long for people to port over the versions of BAIN and OBMM.

Might be a way to change load order, at least add support for it without having to change the file dates, a simple ini file would fix this. Had also be nice if the game could merge levelled list itself. Perhaps if the mod had an add to leveled list function. Would also help them in expansions.

There won't be a mod manager, and it's not bethesda's job to make one. It is in no way required although it makes life a whole lot easier for mod users so all the credit to the people who have made said tools. What annoys me is people demanding bethesda do this and that. We are extremely lucky they even give us there editor and let us play with it. People like you that demand they do this and that are the reasons most gaming companies don't do what bethesda does. They are selling a game, not an editor and we have no right whatsoever demanding anything. Keep it up and they may just decide it's not worth it.

What's needed is for the game to be a little more discerning in loading it's mods. Rather than just looking at the surface of an object to determine if it's been modified, then taking the last change, it needs to be able to determine what part of t he object has been changed. That way if one mod changes a weapon's weight, but another changes it's damage, it will be able to apply both, instead of just one of them. That right there would eliminate the need for some of those tools.

Well there will be third party tools regardless of how much native support Bethesda includes, so thats not really the point. I just thought that it would be better for the default mod loading tool to be more like OBMM, because with Oblivion just about anyone who would be going to even look at the default mod manager would already be using OBMM or Wrye Bash(probably both). So I think they should just copy(or hire the guy, whatever) OBMM and OMOD compression formats and use them by default. Or just have a launcher that can read .ZIP or .RAR files.

Edit: And thats not such a big deal. Bioware has this with Dragon Age already, a tool that installs mods that use a game specific compression(like a .zip or omod).

Yeh I mean since theres a new engine then the editor is probably going to be very different too, so this could all be moot. Things like leveled and loot lists could be handled differently already to the point where merging lists might not be needed. Idk.

Hows the view up there from that horse of yours? I wasnt aware suggesting and discussing ideas was "demanding", so you should probably just avoid the forums altogether if ideas bother you so much.
