GOTY Install Problems

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:02 pm

I recently bought the GOTY edition of Morrowind for my laptop, which is running Vista Home Premium. I already own Morrowind, and that installs and runs fine, but when I tried to install the expansions from the GOTY edition (starting with Tribunal) the installer froze on 0%.

I tried uninstalling Morrowind and installing everything from the one disc, but Morrowind then froze on 2% installed. I have tried multiple times, making sure to uninstall in between attempts, but it still won't install.

I've since reinstalled Morrowind from my old disc, and it works fine, but the expansions still won't install. And I'm not entirely sure if it uninstalled completely, because my save files were intact? (As a side issue, how do I delete save files? I don't play many games on PC).

Reading through the FAQs I decided to try and end some non-essential processes, of which there are quite a lot running, but now the installer for Tribunal won't work correctly. Instead of going to the normal installer, it takes me to a screen where I can choose to modify, repair or remove the previous installation of tribunal. Looking in my control panel there is a Tribunal listed, although with no file size given, and when I go to uninstall it it gives me the same screen. Asking it to remove it, it says it does so correctly, but then it doesn't uninstall? The program is still sitting there?

If anyone can tell me how to uninstall the tribunal file I can try installing again by turning off some processes, and any more help would be great.

Thanks.

This site explains how to manually uninstall morrowind, the same applies to the expenssions: http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/316/the_elder_scrolls_iii_morrowind_tweak_guide/index2.html

As for saves most games when being uninstalled keep the save files and setting files so if you ever install them again you can pick up where you left up. It usually doesn't matter because these files are small. If you uninstalled everything you can just go to program files and delete them from the bethesda softworks\morrowind\saves (can just delete bethesda softworks, but if you didn't uninstall correctly you will not be able to use the automatic uninstaller) also as for why you may not be able to uninstall the properly, the answer may be because the uninstaller was never installed in the first place.

In an attempt to start everything from the beginning, I uninstalled Morrowind from control panel, then Deleted the entire Bethesda Softworks folder from Program Files, as that site says to do. I didn't do the RegCleaner step as the link is broken, but continuing on I rebooted the computer. Unfortunately, Tribunal is still showing in control panel for uninstalling programs.

How do I get rid of it?

It still sees it because the way it works is it scans the registry for a list of installed programs and were the uninstaller should be. If there is no uninstaller it can't uninstall. Here is a working link to reg cleaner: http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm

After you remove all bethesda stuff from your registry it should no longer see it. (You cold also manually get most of them without reg cleaner but its more complicated to find them)

There is only one Bethesda Softworks entry in the RegCleaner, but it won't remove it. When I select it, then click 'Remove Selected' it says 'working', finishes, but then it remains there. Even after a reboot.

try this

Click start -> Run and type in "regedit" then enter

now:
*expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
*expand SOFTWARE
*Look inside the Bethesda Softworks area tell me what you see

Note: if you have a 64bit system then you will also need to expand Wow6432Node

That entry won't remove it from the Control Panel installed programs list.

@OP: You need to delete the registry key associated with Uninstaller. I don't have a separate listing for Tribunal so I cannot give you an exact key, but I can help.

First go to Run... (or use Search bar). Type: regedit

Next Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall (on 32-bit operating systems). Now you must search for the Tribunal entry and delete the entire folder. If you get an access error, right-click on the folder and select permissions and give your username, full access to the key.

I suggest that you try to remove this entry with ccleaner. In ccleaner select Tools >> Uninstall then highlight Tribunal and select the delete entry button.

Thanks, that removed the Tribunal entry from the installed programs list :D

Now to try re-instillation of the entire thing!

Still freezing on 2% when I try to install, despite me ending all the processes I could.

The two setups only appear from trying to install, and don't disappear when it is closed down.

Any help?

You still have a Symantec service active. Completely disable the antivirus/personal firewall before attempting to install Morrowind and its expansions. If you cannot simply end all the processes, you'll need to boot into safe mode or perform a clean boot.

For Safe Mode, pressing F8 during boot and select Safe Mode from the options.

For a clean boot.
