Graphics problems using Ubuntu

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:40 pm

i have managed to get Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind installed on my ubuntu operating system. after which i tried to run the game. it locked up in full screen and when i run it in windowed mode it is a little glitchy through the opening videos. once i get into the game and get off the boat i start having graphics glitches. the ocean has lines through it and the bottom left 1/4 of the screen has a weird box covering it. i have searched all over the net and despite all of the information on how to install morrowind on linux there is no information about any kinds of graphics glitches. so i figured i would start a post here.

here are my system specs

2.8ghz amd sempron processor
1gig ddr2 ram
160gig hdd
ati radeon hd 4550 hdmi video

currently using WINE to run the game and it installed very quickly and works fine. except for the graphics issues i am having. i have the most up to date video drivers for my card so i dont know what else to do.

keep in mind that im still considered a novice linux user so i may have some trouble understanding any replies containing linux terminal codes but i am willing to be persistent and to learn more about it.

thank you for your time and i hope i get a reply.

The best place to get help for running apps under Wine is at the http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=3383.

What you are describing sounds like it could be a graphics driver problem to me. I use an nVidia card with the latest driver and don't have any graphics problems that I know of.

i have already been to that website and they have no information for my specific video card. i thought it could be a driver issue but i have the most up to date (and coincedently the only) ati driver for linux that i could find. i have many other programs that were designed for windows on this computer and morrowind is the only one that has any problems.

i did see something about the pixel shaders causing a problem but as far as i know they are already turned off. but i will check again after this is posted just to be sure.

all is good. but i ran into a new problem. when i try to edit the controls the entire pc locks up. unfortunately this refreshed the reason i stopped playing morrowind in the first place. there is no autosave and i just wasted 3 hours playing the game only to start over from scratch.... so frustrating
