Why, can't you see Fallout as others do?

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 11:52 pm

I hear ya, kid. I'm old enough to remember buying my own boxed copy of Fallout 1 the day it hit store shelves for the first time. I can even tell you what the demo was like beforehand. As everybody else has mentioned in this thread: turn-based isometric perspective simply doesn't sell these days - this is a sad truth. But after so many years, you basically had two choices: Either the Fallout franchise would have forever been lost to the sands of time, or it could have a reincarnation using an engine more appealing to a bigger market. Between letting a legendary game franchise die out, or resurrecting it as a critical and commercial success that isn't entirely faithful to its "roots", I'd choose the latter because I'm still getting an entertaining game that I like to play, and I get to see a continuation of that weird post-1950's American apocalypse I've grown so fond of.

*Applauds*

You just hit the nail on the head. I can't agree more.

I think you should wait for F4 instead, if i have to say, Mr. Eddy :tops: .
Fallout 4 might use different engine than the Gamebryo engine of Fallout 3...
And, we must pass on.. Not every generation could stand isometric RPGs (especially kids these days  im still a teenager, but i love isometrics too you know ^_^ )
So, we must pass on...

Exactly! it's like we no attention span I....what is that? (wanders off) heheh I'm waiting good sir, I'm waiting!.

By the way I like that Mr.Eddy stuff makes mah feel important. haha

some of the reasons are technical though. Fallout is one hell of a demanding game - you need a top of the range system TODAY to get the best out of Fallout 3, which came out 3 years ago! If they ramped up the graphics to the next level, you would have to wait a few years for computers to catch up so you could actually play it! :brokencomputer:

And it's not just PCs: remember Fallout is now a console game too. If they delivered a game that the Xbox or PS3 physically couldn't run, they would be in trouble.

Personally - I'm willing to keep the current engine for a while yet, as long as the stories and plots keep coming thick and fast. Everything else is just a mod away really.

I think Fallot 3 was terrible with the graphics and the engine, in fallout 2 you fire a rocket and the blast in to pieces not continuing stand there looking at you!. the graphics were Better in Fallout 2!

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Seriously, even YEARS ago when I played FO2, it still looked absolutely terrible. I'm sorry, as great as Fallout 2 is, the graphics are incredibly off putting.

Oh crap.....that's right what if my comp can't play it!? and if the xbox as well..... we'd need a whole new alien console pc!?
that is one thing though mods are taking over it seems. In a good way though.

What's the point of playing a first to third person shooter if you shoot fluffy pink bunnies at everything?. Actually that might be kinda fun...(Eat the pink bunny of death!!" with some kind of battle cry like "hurraaaaaggg" while firing like a minigun..what if that's how the matrix helicopter scene went!? (eyes grow big) (smiles)

uh...are you sure we're playing the same game here?

Also, Fallout 3 on max graphics on a 1080p computer screen are by no means bad. Especially with some nice texture and animation mods.

If you want new RPGs that look like they're from the 90s and very smiler to F1&F2 developed by backwards developers who don't wanna keep up with the rest of the world, get a Nintendo DS

There isn't a market for isometric games anymore, or at least not a big money market.

I'll see you swallowing that when Diablo 3 comes.
Also, DA:O was partly isometric (depending on your choice of course, but the combat was far more convenient from that view point - and TB would've actually worked with the combat system fine).

As for TB, we don't know if there is market for them since no-one makes western RPGs with turnbased combat anymore - everybody's so hung up with easy money from the twitching FPS crowd that they don't care to even try.

Isometric games are alive and well. Dragon Age had isometric combat. The highly anticipated Diablo 3 will be isometric too. Same with Dungeon Siege 3. Many JRPGs still stick to an isometric, turn based style. Pretty much every strategy game you can think of is isometric, including the crazy popular Starcraft 2. MMOs. But yes, when it comes to most games on the Xbox 360, first person is the most popular.

I'd also like to point out that the original Fallout 3 (Van Buren) was going to give the player the option of using either turn based or real time combat, just like Arcanum had. This can be seen in the leaked tech demo.

EDIT: partially ninja'd by UnDeCafIndeed

it has to be said that previous to Fallout 3, my favourite game of all time was Dawn Of War (the original series) - which is this fantastic real-time 3D Isometric thing. So I thought I wouldn't like Fallout 3 at all - I never liked FPS. But I became a convert, and now when I go back and play DOW (which I do occasionally) I have to play it zoomed right in, over the shoulder almost, for it to make sense. Wierd.

aaaaanyway...

I'm personally happy that isometric view is on the way to the garbage bin. I hate it, I can't get immersed into a world and with characters that are more or less small dots I see from a bird's eye view. There are several old RPGs I would love to play, but the isometric view ruins it for me.

I thought he was a troll at first too, but he registered in 2008 so it seems unlikely.

I suspect he took a wrong turn on the way to the NMA forums.

New Vegas will be the best in the series and it will blow the other 3 fallouts combined right out of the water. I believe the OP didn't realize that

Exactly. There are even extremely popular 3rd person games that I won't buy because it would be a waste of my money because I know I won't like them. I don't know why for the life of me a game developer would not design a game that at least gave the OPTION of 1st person play. You could offer either view as a preference to the player. I simply won't buy a 3rd person only game much less isometric. Sure, there are some really good games I'm missing out on I've been told. But everything is about immersion to me. I want to feel like I'm actually IN the game world and seeing everything through MY OWN eyes and living out my existance IN the game. Not that I'm controlling a digital avatar running around that's not actually me.

Being in 1st person does not mean spraying lead and killing everything in sight. In my opinion, it's the most realistic feeling view.

The OP started out with ranting about Fallout:3 rather than offering constructive critisim which is covered in our rules:
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/724862-forum-rules-and-general-information/
8. The only criticism that is allowed here is constructive criticism and that is welcome.

Constructive criticism criticizes a proposed idea. Criticism that is directed against one person, be it a modder, another member, an individual developer, a certain moderator or a group effort are all forbidden.
This means that when you voice your concerns, please do so in a way that offers a vehicle for improvement. If you see something going wrong, feel free to say so, but also say something about how to set it right.

It also means that posts that run down other members or factions among the membership who may not agree with you are still out under the rules against flaming and flamebaiting.

Members responded by calling the OP a troll, also covered in our rules:
7. Flaming is not allowed.

Insulting individuals or groups of members and name calling are flames. Any remark that is made to insult another member or group of members will be considered a flame and thus you may receive a warning for it.
Calling people a troll or an apologist for instance can both be considered a flame as can calling someone stupid or ADD. Attacking Xbox players, PS3 players or PC players is not allowed and calling them "console kiddies" or in anyway indicating someone is in some way a lesser person because of their choice is considered a flame here
.

And then a few sprinkled a bit of cross-site trolling into the mix:
6. Cross-Site Trolling is not allowed.

Destructive and personal criticisms of other sites are not welcome here. Disagreements occurring on other forums should stay at those forums and not be brought here. Flaming members or groups of members from other forums and websites (such as "everyone at Forum X is a moron" or "Webmaster Y is an idiot") may result in sanctions against your account. Inciting or organizing attacks against sites will result in the instant termination of your account.

It's therefore closed. I could really beef up my warns and ban numbers for the day if I went back through here and started issuing them for every infraction.
