Dragons dying to cliff racers...?

Post » Thu Aug 19, 2010 2:48 am

I read somewhere Mosquitoes drove out the white settlers in most parts of Africa, but that may have had something to do with the malaria they carried.

Anyone know of examples of smaller, more numerous species making life hard for larger species that compares to cliff racers and dragons?

P.S Run around the Molag Amur region with boots of blinding speed, you attract dozens of cliffracers.

How about bacteria?

Though it's an accepted part of the lore, I think it's a bit of a joke on Bethesda's part. Or at least, that's the way I've always took it. The cliff racers are pests and would probably not be able to drive away powerful, intelligent creatures like dragons. It's just poking fun of how much fans anticipate the appearances of dragons in their games. They are, afterall, built up to be rare, mysterious and highly symbolic. The only times they've appeared are in ancient writings, as statues or

. An excuse was needed to keep a certain distance between them and Tamriel, so that when they finally do decide to reveal one (I hope it'll happen eventually), it'll be that much more significant.

I also tend to think the same of the reason why horses didn't feature in Morrowind. They claimed it was the harsh climate, which is a little more reasonable, but I believe it was mostly because they couldn't/didn't want to include mounts. I'll bet that little detail will be retconned (or solved by some miraculous horse equipment) at a later date.

Actually, they showed a "regular" dragon in TES Adventures: Redguard.

Completely forgot about external titles. You're right, of course, but I still think there's some effort made to keep a sense of mystique about dragons in TES.

And a skeleton of one in Battlespire. I think the reasoning was that they're trying to stay away from dragons until they can present them properly...

Why would a dragon live in crapstain Vvardenfell? Nobody wants to live there.

Because its warm, and they're lizards, and lizards like the warm.

Truthfully, I'd love to hear something akin to them being there since the Dawn Era as guardians of the Heart and its mythic powers, thereby making the emergence of the cliffracers either a horrible coincidence or even better, the plague-like agent of a third party to remove the Heart's guardians. To add to it, in this context it would make sense that the dragons would go to Cyrodiil to serve whoever controls the White-Gold Tower, given that it stole supremacy from those before it it - hell, it was a dragon that defended it from Dagon. Of course, this ventures into stereotypical roles for dragons, which isn't really TES's thing.

so i guess the question is where did they go to, my guess is that vvanderfalls dragons joined with what remaining dragons escaped akavir so that the population can grow again, dragons seem to favor places with mountains and access to a great water space, so my guess would be high rock is the most possible place a dragon can live in

"Some say the dragons moved on closer to Cyrodil, where they gained shelter and security from the Empire, along with dragons from other parts of Tamriel. Dragons are very sacred to the Empire, and as long as the Empire protects the dragons, the dragons MUST offer services to the Empire, such as aiding and protecting the Imperial forces in war (Redguard, the fight for Stros M'kai).

Just a little "in the know" for those who are curious about dragons. They DO exist, just not everywhere. Even in Cyrodil, where the majority of dragons may be, they are scarcely seen. Could it be they can shapeshift and use human form?"

They just went away to greener pastures (literally, nothing could be more bleak than MW). Not even Dragons could stand these annoying things.

Why is it that only fshawe points out the obvious: it's a joke? Why isn't "it's a joke, son" the very first reply? You guys will dismiss most of what's seen in Oblivion as the product of laziness and stupidity on the part of the dev team, but bend over backwards to incorporate an obvious joke into the lore?

We do it because it's cool. Little details like this make the place special. Now Morrowind is a place where the wildlife is so annoying, not even Dragons will stay. How often does that happen? Just like the absence of horses because the grass ain't right results in people having to ride Gaurs, Stiltstriders or giant hornets.

It's those ideas and the ease by which they can be made to look as completely natural that makes this fun. Cyrodiil as shown in Oblivion doesn't allow for that strangeness because it's all too ordinary.
If you compare Oblivion to Knights of the Nine for example, you can really see how Knights of the Nine adds that almost absurd divine and magical thinking back to the world. This makes it allot easier to explain why Pelinals armour is repaired on the stand.
For example you can assume he's from the future going back into time, or it's got nano bots doing repairs. Of course the boring explanation would be that the smith fixed it but that's not half as cool and nevermind the real explanation: gameplay.

No cliffracers killed any dragons. The problem was that the cliff racers destroyed the food chain, and the Dragons desided to jump ship to Cyrodil.

Wait... then shouldn't the cliff racers' population begin to level out as well because of their own food limitations and sheer numbers?

This is the same series where wolves, bears, mountain lions, and bandits will aggressively attack any traveler they encounter on sight in a fight to the death, without any regard for their own survival.
