Where can I download Redguard & Battlespire?

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:50 pm

I was thinking of buying them off of eBay but I'm not sure the disks would run under my Windows 7 OS. Has anybody done a DOS setup executible download version of the games like they did for Daggerfall and Arena? How are people nowadays playing Redguard and Battlespire? Hmm, if they came after Daggerfall, then they probably don't require DOS. If that's the case, then would I be better off just buying the actual games online? Because I don't want to buy them and then find out I can run the disk on my computer.

I think it should work, but I'm not sure. I've not tried.

I think you can play the disc versions using these instructions:

I found both games on eBay for about $60 which is fine by me. That webpage says that when you enter Clavicus' Vile's realm, the game will freeze if you're not using true DOS or windows 95/98. That svcks.

Paying that much money for those games is not okay by me. Have they been offered for free anywhere?

Well then you're not going to play them, because they're not freeware, or legally downloadable anywhere, if you want there is a demo of Redguard, but thats it.

By the way, they're definitely worth the money, because you know they're great games.

Don't you need to run the game inside a DOS-based glide wrapper if you have a modern pc? Last I heard, GliDOS was such an available program. It lists Redguard compatibility on its website, in fact.

You can run it in DOS Mode in DOSBox, or some CVS builds of DOSBox have glide support, as well there is the glide wrapper dgvoodoo which is free to play the game in.

You probably don't have a good paying job then.

Redguard is very difficult to get running and a bit sputtery even when you do (as in, running fine, and then suddenly at 5x speed for a second. It's a pain for all those jumping puzzles). Battlespire is easier, but I've never been able to get it to run very smoothly in DOSbox (then again, my computer wasn't that up-scale when I got it 7 years ago).

But both great games. I'd put BS above RG, but that's me.

What! Don't be ridiculous, Redguard is often sold on Ebay for around $10 + shipping. You just need to watch for better deals. Do what I do and watch http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A10%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1&rt=nc&_nkw=elder%20scrolls&_dmpt=Video_Games_Games&_sc=1&_sop=10&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.l1513&_pgn=1 for a few days and a cheap copy of Redguard is bound to show up. Battlespire is rarely ever cheap though, so you might as well just order the cheapest copy you can find right now.

You probably don't have a good paying job then.

You know, insulting the people trying to help you isn't exactly a good strategy if you want them to keep helping you.

Your best bet for Redguard is to travel back in time to around late 99/early 2000. The game sold so poorly that my GameStop (or "Babbages" as we called it back then) had an entire shelf of unsold copies priced at $3.99. These are probably the very same copies that are being sold for $60.

It's really a shame the game did so badly; it remains one of my favorites. Stros M'kai is one of the most fully realized settings in an ES game so far.

Yes - I remember picking up my copy of redguard for $1.99 from babbages during a clearance sale. What I regret is not picking up the 3 full-sized boxed Arena copies in the same bin. (I thought, why should I, I already have a copy.... what a fool!) But back to readguard - I have been unable to get it to run reliably in 3DFX mode even with the DosBox CVS versions or Glide wrappers. I have enough computer power, but it will only run in software mode. Battlespire runs fine with a little Dosbox tweaking, but damn, it seems harder than I remember! Must be old age setting in!

I think Battlespire is worth the money, especially since if there are enough people who have it on these forums we can arrange some online matches.

We have a dedicated IPX server now, so it'd be no trouble to actually connect people if they'd show up too!
