Playing my first JRPG

True, it did not have alot of uniqueness going for it, but I felt it was very well crafted, and presented the generic qualaties quite well. I also like that the main char. is not some spiky haired kid who ends up having to save the world or sumesuch. He is an actual trianed warrior and has been around for a good long while.

Lost Odyssey's plot was fairly standard, but it stood out in my mind with its writing. Especially the "Thousand Years of Dreams" sequences. I think JRPGs tend to have trouble conveying their stories, whether something is lost in translation or just wasn't all there to begin with, but I thought Lost Odyssey nailed it. Could be because the story was simplistic.

Well I can't think of a whole lot of jrpg's that really have a kid character that isn't trained or anything like that. I mean if that's a crack at Final Fantasy that doesn't really hold true for most of the series. Not a lot of other JRPG's follow that formula either (there are a couple that come to mind that do but for the most part it's not that common). Mostly I hear that and I think that the people who say that really haven't played a lot of jrpg's because there are a lot out there that don't fit that archetype.

That was actually one of my favorite parts of the game and one of it's redeeming qualities. Like I said it's not that bad of a game and it does have some decent points to it.

We've already been there. Talked about such things giving US dubs a bad rep and all that junk. ^_^

The soundtrack isn't bad so far, though I'm not crazy about the battle music with its electric guitar. You start feeling like you're playing in an episode of Power Rangers.

Get used to it. A big number of JRPGs these days mimic Japanese action series' in some of their music.

I also tried TLR as my foray into the strange world of JRPGs and struggled with it somewhat. Although some players find it easier to look past such things, I really couldn't forgive my character being such a pain in the butt: he was rather like Wesley Crusher only worse and irritated the hell out of me. As the game went on, he just seemed to get worse. The combat system was unusual compared to my experience of other games and I simply couldn't get the hang of the controls, which seemed to bear little resemblance to the vague instructions suggested by the manual.

I'm not saying I'm not at fault for not getting on with it, but I have to say it really wasn't my cup of tea at all.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ze_h6DK2jps. Say what you will about FFXIII, but the soundtrack is grand. So few people appreciate this, it's saddening. How many gamers are there who care to route their sound to something other than the TV?

Not a bad track. That reminds me, have you played "Stalker:Shadow of Chernobyl"? There's a jazz flute number that plays in a bar. It's a little incongruous because it's a frontier bar, but the piece works somehow. http://youtu.be/rS7p8Pc8Elg

I can't even compare them to most stuff before. Far too orchestral, some downright Wagnerian. Simply awesome.
Hamauzu, Sakimoto and Yoko Shimomura. I prefer all three to Uematsu, as much as his music defined my experiences in JRPGs. ^_^
