Depending on the game, and how seriously I'm taking it at the time, I'll sometimes play music and sometimes not.
In Assassin's Creed, I never do, because it has ambient sounds in the music track which actually give you clues about enemies approaching, and music would drown out half my ability to spot my hunter.
In Resistance, I can hear everything I need well enough even over medium volume rock/metal/industrial music. When I'm in the mood to mess around, I'll play something fast that keeps the rush going even in the game's quieter moments - I find it makes me less likely to panic or react stupidly. When I'm playing more seriously, or when I want to make someone eat their words after accusing me of being a noob, the music turns off and I prove them horribly, horribly wrong.
