Bugged quest: A Brush with Death

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:40 pm

I've accepted this quest, talked with Rythe's wife, and she gave me a key to his studio. I've stepped into the painting and met Rythe Lythandas in the painting. He only says "swit of thief!" to me and there's no dialogue option re: the quest. He doesn't explain anything to me about a bosmer attcking him in his studio or stealing his brush of truepaint.

I've killed all the trolls and gone to the portion of the map that the mapquest marker is located at. There's no dead thief Senannala there, and therefore no brush of truepaint to reclaim. So, without this paintbrush, there's no way to complete the quest and no way to reenter Cyrodiil from within his painting!

Is there a console cheat to automatically finish or trigger a quest as completed?

Thanks.

Occasionally upon entering the painted world, Rythe does not converse with you about the thief and stolen paintbrush. The painted trolls are active, and you can kill them, but there is no thief or paintbrush to be found. In this case, save and re-load the game then approach Rythe. This should cause the quest to progress as usual.

A bug noted in the UESP just save and reload.

Save before handing the brush back as well, for the door sometimes fails to appear ( though that just may be me ).

That's also a known bug and yeah basically all you can do about it is save before giving the paint brush.

In my experience, that's been from changing the timescale. If you've changed it, reset it to the default 30 before speaking with him and the door should appear as normal.

Same has happened to me, but I never alter the timescale.

For the OP: Besides reloading or using the Unofficial Patch you could try to set the quest stages via the console.

SetStage MS14 50

If that doesn't work, keep going...

SetStage MS14 55
SetStage MS14 60
SetStage MS14 70
SetStage MS14 72
SetStage MS14 75

And if that still doesn't complete the quest...

Just check the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:A_Brush_With_Death page for it. It details all the known bugs in quests but it doesn't say the problem is only caused by changing the timescale just that it may cause it.

I didn't say that was the only cause. It's A cause, and it's been ruled out.
