Player Made Mods crashing Oblivion during launch

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 8:29 pm

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a new laptop, which installed Oblivion on, and transferred all my mods over. I am, however, having a major problem.

On my old laptop, I was using the standard Oblivion Launcher, using the Data menu to select my mods, and it would load fine. I had some obse files in my Data folder, but I don't think I ever ended up using them. All of these mods worked fine - used to play with all enabled at the same time.

That's a pic of the mods, the selected ones are the ones that work (also the only Official Mods, I notice...).

For whatever reason, if I select ANY one of those other mods, the game crashes as soon as the Oblivion Window comes up. It doesn't even have time to play the Bethesda logo animation :/

Anyone know what the problem is? For some reason it seems like I remember patching my Oblivion Launcher to be able to launch such mods...but how/where I have no idea. Maybe it's just a loader that looks/functions like the actual loader? Honestly I have no idea <_< This was a few years ago...

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Its because your Oblivon .ESM is loaded at almost the last place in your load order. Google the term "BOSS", also known as Better Oblivion Sorting Software. It will make sure that your game always has the proper load order.
If you're going to get into Oblivion mods, you had better start getting obsessive compulsive about your load order.

Also, I never heard of any patch to an oblivion loader which makes you be able to play mods. All you need is the newest oblivion patch, but the loader stays the same. That may be the problem, but still check out the load order.

If none of this works, post again, and we'll try to help.

Thank you very much sir, I will take a look into that ^_^

Please, post your load order - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=know_how_to#PostYourLoadOrder

Check mods' ReadMe files to make sure you are not missing requirements. For example, many mods require http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=obse.

1. The order shown in the screenshot is not real loading order. You have to use OBMM or Wrye Bash to see real order.
2. You try to use Keychain for http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21104, yet you don't have COBL. Missing master is one of the cause of CTD at startup. And, it's old mod. The latest version of http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3409 does not require it, but it may add its configuration tool into COBL menu if COBL is detected.
3. Make sure you installed OBSE. Some of mods there, like keychain require it to work.
4. Streamline 2.1 is old version. Get 3.1 beta...

Yes, definitely grab the latest version of Streamline - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=stabilization_and_optimization_mods <-- link to it (and IMPORTANT instructions) here

Lol guys, I'm aware of the necessity of COBL, I had it on my old laptop, plan on getting it once I smooth this wrinkle first ;)

As for the streamline, I don't need that anymore. This lappy plays Oblivion on the highest quality settings, with everything turned on, in fullscreen, even with other applications running. I bought a beast =P

Thanks for the concern though :D

EDIT: Having an issue with the BOSS software....it's giving me a message saying that it can't find "BOSSlog.txt" which was not included anyways. From what I understand, this is the output file?

I find this odd, I never had to do all this stuff before....I know for a fact that I wasn't using OBMM or anything similar, I can create a vid and upload to youtube if it would help.

EDIT: As I said before, I did have obse files on my old computer, but I didn't ever have to open anything...The launch page was the standard Oblivion Launch window...the elder scrolls look, with "Play" Data Files" "Options" "Elderscrolls.com" "Technical Support" "Uninstall" and "Exit." I have NEVER opened anything else to launch Oblivion, so I'm curious as to why I would have to now.

Sorry to double post, edit list was getting long, wanted to make sure this was read...

I just created a blank BOSSlog.txt file in hopes it would work...it did, but the reorder didn't go through because I "Didn't have Administrator permissions," even though this is the only account on the computer (other than Safe Mode master account obviously). I moved it to another location, ran it again, said it was successful. All mods were recognized, so I launched....no luck. Same problem still :L

If I had a monster rig I'd still use Streamline for its Streamsaves alone, but also for the the FOV change feature.

Hell guys, I just went the simple way. Deleted the old mods, tracked them down online and re-installed....works fine now, I don't have a single OMOD, OBSE, COBL, etc. file at the moment. Obviously, I'll be needing to find the newest version of the keyring and see if it still requires COBL, if not I'm good to go. So much for mod managers <_<

EDIT: I do understand that many mods now seem to require OBSE, though I have no idea why. Regardless, I'm happy with these for now :)

Alternately, check out a mod called http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3595. It's an XML-only mod (no requirements) which allows you to switch to a gridded inventory and/or "collapse" any category of items -- including keys.

I do understand that many mods now seem to require OBSE, though I have no idea why.

OBSE adds many, many script commands which allow things that are literally impossible without it.

Edit: Off by one letter on that inventory mod... would have killed a Nexus search. :P It's a link now.
