anybody just started playing daggerfall

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 7:11 pm

ive never played any of the elderscrolls before morrowind until now, i downloaded the free ready to go dosbox version and ive got to say its pretty amazing. I wasnt expecting much from a game this old and its awesome to have an all new(to me) elder scrolls game to explore. I was wondering if there is anybody else out there who has just gotten into daggerfall and what their opinions of the game so far are

Been playing a while but the old graphics do not mar the quality of this excellent game.

Its dungeons blow all other TES dungeons out the water.

I'm about to start a lets play of it actually, but I gotta say that from my last attempt, it's really difficult. I mean its good, but just....confusing! I think if it had even morrowind-level graphics (and speech!) it would probably be a bit easier to play, just for recognizability of buildings.

Yup, started playing not long ago.

After checking it out briefly I made a new custom rogue. So far I'm blowing everyone in my way to pieces with my mithril longsword and heavy armour - without the need for backstabs (skill too low at this low level  ). So that's quite so easy.

Cool game though, the open world is good (TES after all), the overly large dungeons (to put it mildly) are my only gripe with it seeing as I'm someone who tend to enjoy the living world and its surface quests a bit more than the dungeon crawling. Still fun, but time consuming!

Started in the thief guild, will likely not bother (more) with the MQ until I sink more into the game.

Lest not forget ti..

Quick tip: Adjust your control style to that of a modern game and set the game speed to fast very fast.

Is it better to change game speed to very fast?

i find it easier on very slow, it gives you more time to way up your options and think more tactically, but really its all down to playstyle, I would suggest trying a few different speeds out on test characters and then pick the one you feel most comfortable with. Hope that helps

I haven't tested it extensively, but from what little I played on normal speed, and from what I've heard other experienced DF-players say, it really does not make that much of a difference - I certainly don't find it harder. Also you level up faster with the faster flow of things.

Edit: Yeah it might vary slightly according to game style, so far I tend to just bash everything with my long sword :P

Even if you put it on very slow after awhile the game adjusts to your reaction speed and speeds it up some. So as you play the game at first they will react slow but then speed up to about your reaction level. If you want a challenge put it on very fast but to just start out and learn the game put it to very slow.

All it does is tells you how slow/fast monsters react when attacking you.

I started out playing on very fast for the challenge, and I haven't had many difficulties throughout my 3 or 4 month career. With most monsters it doesn't seem to make much of a difference, but I have noticed that casters really like to "machine gun" their spells.

Sometimes this can be quite devastating, but other times it can be quite amusing, especially with liches and other monsters that use area of effect attacks (watching them charge up to you and explode can be quite amusing =D).

Really, since everyone says it doesn't affect difficulty all that much, my recommendation would be to crank up the reaction speed for the slightly increased skill advancement speed, especially if you have experience with Morrowind, and to a lesser extent, Oblivion. The decreased reaction time will mostly help those who don't have much experience with RPGs, since they may not understand the basic structure of gameplay, and would need more time to figure out how to tackle what for them is an entirely new type of challenge/gameplay style.

Besides, what kind of video game/RPG junkie doesn't like a good challenge?! :)

I just installed it yesterday, made a character, but....I think I may need to tweak the DOSbox setting? Maybe I'll post a thread about it if I cant find the solution myself.
