DOS save editors for Daggerfall

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 7:18 pm

I've been having issues getting a good save editor to work for me, because I am on linux and can't run windows utilities (and WINE svcks for me). The obvious solution to this is to use a DOS program and just run it in DOSbox; however, I can't seem to find a good one that works. DF-EDIT2 which I got from the Embassy is wonky and won't work. Simple is fine, all I want to do is alter skills.

Any suggestions?

Daghex by Lord Oberon is a DOS editor, and IMO it's the best... I've got a copy. I did email Svatopluk about hosting this but no response yet. Someone on alt.games.daggerfall is also looking for it, I really should post it somewhere. Maybe the UESP?

@Jormungandr - I've been using Wine a lot under Linux over the past couple years and have picked up a few of its ins and outs and might be able to help you out with Wine questions if you are having problems with it.

@Python - I'd love to get Daghex too.

This Daghex sounds intriguing!

John: I appreciate the offer, but I just don't use enough windows programs to justify the effort ;)
Thanks, though.

I just emailed the UESP about hosting it, I am not sure if I can just upload there myself.

In the mean time, if anyone wants it, just pm me your email address and I'll email it to you.

When I enquired about how to upload a non-image type file to the UESP, Rpeh (an admin at uesp.net) told me:
"We don't really host that kind of thing. It's more suited to mod sites."

I'm not sure which Daggerfall mod sites (yea, all fifty of 'em! ^_^) Rpeh was talking about... IIRC, the UESP has hosted save game editors since DF save game editors were released, and still do:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Files#Save_Game_Editors

I uploaded it anyway, but possibly still looking for a good home.

Edit: IMO, Rpeh is a fool. First he tells me that the UESP doesn't host editors. He then said UESP doesn't host exes. I said that it does. He asks me where, so I point out the DF files page. So then he asks "why do we need another one?"

I am left wondering why the UESP was made a community wiki then left with admins who have no idea about the content of the site.

DEFINITELY still looking for a good home!

Well, I don't understand Rpeh's position, but I'm glad it's up on the UESP. Thanks!

Okay, since I'm being attacked I think I get a right of reply.

First, Python has missed out the part where I advised him to put the files into a ZIP and upload it using the Special:Upload page, which is exactly what he then did.

Second, I stand by what I said. UESP is NOT a site that hosts executables in general. We tend to leave that to mod sites. If you read what I said - in context - I was saying that UESP isn't the BEST place to host this kind of thing. If you look at our task list (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/UESPWiki:Task_List#Site_Tasks) you'll see that the issue of hosting mods is one that has been discussed and has been in limbo for many a long month. We don't have support for versioning or any of the benefits you get from hosting a mod on, say, TESnexus.

Thirdly, I suggested "mod sites" in general. There may not be specific Daggerfall sites but there are plenty of mod sites that would be glad to host any files you choose to submit.

Fourthly, the comment about EXEs was taken out of context. I said that any executable should be put into a ZIP. That's because any EXE uploaded to the wiki (as opposed to anything that might still be hosted on the pre-wiki version) would be deleted immediately as a virus threat.

The reason I was selected as an admin is because I do know what is on the site. I know what's required and I know what I'm doing. I will freely admit that I make mistakes but in this case I gave advice to someone who wanted it and was simply trying to clarify why he thought it was necessary.

If you've changed your mind about wanting to host that file on UESP, please tell me and I'll delete it. If not, please don't be so insulting.

Quite humorous that within 6 hours this Rpeh is on here with a spanking new username and a rebuttal of sorts. It's funny in principle and in the quickness of reply. Were you tipped off, or are you one of those characters who frequently searches for his name just in case someone said something about you? Not that it really matters, of course.

You clearly aren't familiar with the sections for the older titles--especially Daggerfall. Perhaps you are more familiar with the later titles, Morrowind and Oblivion, where it is true that the UESP does not host files for them (other than a patch) because any files would be mods--which are indeed more suited for mod sites. And mods for those games are prolific, so it simply is not feasible to host them all.

And that's great, but this isn't a mod. It is a character save file editor, one that is unique from all others you have hosted because it runs completely in DOS mode. This is an older game, there are no hordes of mods; there are less than 10 or 15 total if I remember correctly, and with a couple of notable exceptions they are very small. Instead there are a variety of patches and utilities--many of which are hard to find for current Daggerfall players. The UESP is already hosting many files for the older games, and being so few it is no problem. Why do you pretend now that it is different? Any quick glance shows quite clearly that this is exactly the sort of thing the UESP hosts.

You do remember that the UESP began as a site for hosting files and information for Arena, Daggerfall, etc. right?

BEST EVER! Holy cow that's a great editor! Thank you for sending and uploading this.

I was "tipped off" as it happens.

I'm quite familiar with the older sections, thank you. I have all the games (with the exception of a couple of the mobile ones) and my next major project after finishing my current work on the Shadowkey namespace is to revamp the Battlespire namespace.

Don't split hairs. I know it's not a mod. I was using it as a catch-all term for downloadable content. And I've already said that I know we host this kind of thing. I've downloaded a saved game editor for Battlespire from the site myself. I've also already said that I told Python what he needed to do. Please stop attacking me when you have no idea of what happened, what was said or what was meant.

I stand by my original comments. And I would have you delete it out of spite but it seems like people want it on there so leave it.

By the way, isn't it just a little crazy that DagHex is (was?) the hardest editor to find a copy of? ;) I wonder whatever happened to Lord Oberon...

Perhaps it is time to make a master list/collection of all the DF files, editor, utilities, etc.?
It just isn't right that something this useful fell into obscurity. If someone has a good DF utility that others don't, they should share it!

I agree. I'm still hoping someone out there has more of Donald Tipton's stuff. I can do something on this in a couple days.

Ok, so I'm going on for 3 years late on this, but I've finally uploaded a bunch of things that I couldn't see around anywhere else on net, and a few that are not widely available. Some of the links are broken until I re-archive the files into formats the host likes...
http://slushpool.fortunecity.com/.

If you have any Daggerfall utilities, mods, quest packs, etc, or hacking lore that isn't available to everyone please get it on the net :)

More to come.
