Random Colors Crash : Fallout: New Vegas

I just bought this game today. It crashes and totally locks up my computer. When it crashes there are green and pink pixels scattered on the screen. I reinstalled Windows today and installed up to date drivers.

Multi-colored, anomalous shapes / misplaced pixels on screen may represent a variety of video graphics problems, including driver problems, overheat, and Dx9 problems. Nothing that I can see jumps off the page to yell out about any problem at me, but I can only manage to read about the first 5% of any DxDiag report, before the margin to margin unformatted blocks seem to start swimming into a soup of words and letters I can't get much of any more out of, sorry.

Card name: ATI Radeon HD 4850. Are you running any thermal monitoring?

I just installed Speedfan and everything seems to be cool.

Temp1= 32C
Temp2= 34C
Temp3= -128C
Core= 27C

Really, no. You do not want anything as hot as 128 Centigrade (I'm having to assume smartfan received some odd sensor data there and reversed the sign). Nothing should be allowed to get that hot, if it has done so.

128C should cause the PC to crash like that. If the fan control for the GPU is on automatic, I suggest turning it to manual. (I keep my primary GPU at about 55% fan speed in CCC and the secondary on automatic).
(For reference 128C is not cool at all. Its around 264F which is more than enough to boil water)

Have you overclocked the card any?

It says negative 128C. Im not sure if the sensor is messed up or what the deal is :/. My computer shows no signs that its going to crash and has worked fine with other games.

Everything in my computer is running on stock settings.

Edit: I just checked my ATI Control Center and it says the video card is running at 40C. It also says the fan speed is at 60%.

The music still plays fine when the game crashes, if that helps any :/. One of the crashes caused my computer fans to speed up, then the the whole computer made a really loud noise before restarting itself. I think it fried my built in card reader since it just happened to malfunction after the crash (And still continues to do so). Now I have to wait until tomorrow until I can talk to somebody that works in support >:C.

I cant believe the stuff software companies get away with these days!

It's hardware or driver related. Either your video card is starting to fail(first sign is what you described with graphic anonmolies) or it's so caked with crap in the cooling fins that it's over heating and crashing. Or you have corrupt drivers somewhere.

Whether it crashes with other games is moot. Funny story, my old Nvidia 8800 would crash in WoW just like what you described. However every other game was perfectly fine, I probably got another month out of it before it started showing up in other games with flickering or failing to render textures properly. The easiest thing to do, is get another video card plug it in and see what happens. If the problem goes away, it's a bad video card. If it stays the same, it's probably software.

*there are other things in computers that can cause videocards to have the flashy/junky/crapted out textures, but they're pretty rare.

Just to edit in here, most of the time when a video card starts to fail it's not the GPU. But rather the ram or a bad transistor/capacitor set somewhere on the card.

I ran Furmark and Video Card Stability test for about 10mins each and the card seems to work fine.

I just tested a Nivida 7300GS card and another 4850 1gb card and it worked. My card was to blame to seems. Good thing its an XFX card, free replacement

Good to know you got it sorted out. There really isn't any easy way to test a video card to see if it's failing or not, it can be hit or miss. At least until the card dies 100%

Yeah, there was no way to tell since it ran other games fine. The failing card also made my boot time a lot slower. My card reader is working again, go figure
