Controversial Closings

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 1:34 pm

I don't usually post in the lore forums anymore for several reasons. Part of it is because I'm just a dumb dumb, but another part is that it's impossible to have a conversation. I understand that the rules say topics about religion and politics have to be closed, but if that's the cause then what's the point in having a forum?

I was looking around the forums and I saw that a thread was closed because "We are not going to discuss events on Tamriel in terms of a real-world religious war." Why? Do you not want your members of this forum to have philosophical discussions? This is merely one example. I've seen other posts by a Moderator who seems to think that homosixual people are disturbing? This is not only close-minded and highly ignorant, but Moderators of a forum should be open-minded, willing to look at different perspectives. Closing a thread because you think something is "disturbing" is childish. Grow up.

So, I used to think the lore forum here was going downhill because of the members and their boring posts that really don't even belong in the lore forum. But now I know that's only part of the problem. The largest part is because we aren't allowed to talk about the cool stuff. The very second anyone mentions something political or religious the thread is shut down. Or there are even times when a Moderator will shut down a thread because he/she is called out by a member for something they've done. I've seen threads closed not because of rules being broken, but simply because a Moderator didn't agree with what was being said. Why? You might as well shut down the entire forum if you're not going to allow your members to discuss topics that are interesting.

A community cannot form if its people are silenced.

I know this thread will be closed soon, and I very well may get a warning for this, but this needs to be said. Not that it hasn't already, but I miss the lore forum. Actually... scratch that. I miss the lore forum of olden days. I never posted much back then, either, but at least there were threads worth reading. None of this "What would you do if you were in Tamriel" and "Are all Redguards black" nonsense.

Just my two cents. Thanks a lot. Now I'm [censored] broke.

Not tht I've been here long enough to remember, but the most interesting and least stunted discussions do seem to date from before I joined (I hope there's not a connection) so "hear hear!" indeed.

Nothing controversial about the closings at all. However, you can get a warning or suspension for disputing moderator action.

Religious topics can, must, and will be closed.

Religion and Politics
Topics or posts that deal with religious or political matters, beliefs, people, or events are not allowed on the forums. This includes issues that are religiously or politically charged.... Discussion of in-game religion and politics as it relates to Bethesda Softworks games and game lore are fine.

This rule will be strictly enforced when members turn a discussion of Tamrielic religion to controversial real-world religious topics. If you have questions, PM a moderator.
