Learning to texture, [WIP}

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 1:46 am

Hello all.

If I could have a minute of your time, please.

As the title says I am teaching myself to texture and would like to bother you a little and ask if anything like this would be of interest.

Weapons and Armor/Armour have been to death....So I am going in another direction entirely. Most of the textures if not all of them are original and created by my humble self.

Give it to me straight, am I wasting my time and yours; Or is there something of value here.

I personally, really like the "frosted glass design" you put on the glass cabinet door. I also like the lacy stuff, that has see-through holes. I think it all looks good, though. :goodjob:

Micky, as several have said, the lace work is quite good and the etched glass is outstanding. My confusion is in what you are asking. Are you proposing to post this and similar material as modder's resources? Or are you proposing to relate what you've learned in some texturing tutorials? I think the answer would be "yes" either way, I just hope you won't mind me asking for a bit of clarification.

I will put some of the best in a texture pack and post it on the Nexus for all to enjoy.....some will be released in an upcoming mod I am working on with a planed release date of the Christmas season. Someone asked if the glass was shinny on ORE and I put up a nifskope render so you can see it..

This one is a detailed but simple pattern used for demonstration of the effect and the varying of the etch pattern.

Yes, when I have this to a simplified process I will write a tutorial.

But the glass from vanilla bites, it is too dense and hardly transparent and quite distortive...so I created a very lightly tinted pane as a base, which I will include in the teaser pack as well....I could never see any detail in what was in the display cases, now I have beauty behind beauty. There are some scaling issues that I am trying to perfect for proper display on the case. There are some definite doo's and don'ts for this and yo have to layer tings in the proper order to highlight the effect. Smooth is easy, putting extra detailing in the etch is kind of a pain and you want to save that for something that is really special.

You call this "learning to texture?" I'd say you've got it down to a fine art. :goodjob: That "frosted glass" in particular is very good. Those beds look very nice, too. I, for one, would download something like this in a heartbeat.

I have been asked how I have accomplished this on the etched glass, here is a very concise explanation of how it is done:

Well you asked how I did it, here is a rather concise breakdown:

Original image

Embossed and cutout to base texture:

Placed in corners and opacity/fill adjusted to show detail and depth:

Normal Map

Closeup showing detail case closed:

Case open to show detail of the etching:

Final result:

It took a bit of time to do this, but it is to demonstrate some of what it takes to create a detailed etching.

Micky

The only thing I left out is the overlay on the glass and merging those layers into the final image that I use to create the dds file and normal map.

I am currently compiling a sample pack of some of the ones that I have shown, and well get some screenshots and will be uploading them to the Nexus later today.

I will post a link as soon as I have it uploaded.

Thanks for the positive reinforcement, it means a lot to me.

Just a couple of hours should do it, I am working between kittens being born this morning......love my kitties.
