Spears/Not in the Classical Sense

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:15 pm

halberds/pikes/polearms would be fine with me so long as i get some kind of spear. its probably easier this way for their new style of combat so we aren't just holding forward or back all day to fight effectively, but able to do sweeps and slashes as well as thrust maneuvers.

Indeed, but heavier, and thus slower.
Although, what about it getting stuck in armor? Thats balance, "I lost my trident, his heavy ebony armor bent the tips, holding the trident in place, half pierced into the armor."

Maybe the wooden shaft is prone to breaking, which is a serious problem for all spears, and would likely be the case for a trident as well.

Tridents are made all from metal in most instances. And almost always solid metal. If the tip is sharp enough(If not Barbed) it wouldnt get stuck in enemy armor.
I dont want to go around wasting 2000 septims a Trident, just to get them stuck and useless.
But it would look awesome.

I would carelessly waste the money on a trident, and if it was a one hit use thing, i would just carry it around as bling and then pull out my sword for real fights

It really does not make sense to have a weapon that was such a staple of the arsenal of the Vikings be missing from the game featuring the Viking inspired race of Nords. It really doesn't. What's next?

Ooh, thats an amazing point. I think that could easily be the cornerstone for a debate on the importance of adding spears.

Dang it I want a spear in a freaking game! Is it really so hard that single player rpgs can't pull it off anymore?!

... Nerd rage done.

Seriously though why can't we just get a classical spear? I would love a spear, spear and shield combo, or even spear and dagger. I just don't understand why we can't get a good old fashioned spear.

Seriously, neither can I. It's the oldest and simplest weapon in the world and it should be in a game like this, even if it requires a little creativity from the devs. Yeah, I'm whining, but not just because I want my spartan hoplite - I prefer ninja-samurais with large catanas, actually. But to me it's all about the consistency of the gameworld - it's finesse and artistic nerve... It's taste! And without spears something fundementally is missing. It's not gamebreaking for me at all. I will buy the game and spend 2000+ happy hours in Skyrim, nevertheless. But each time I'm attacked by large, mindless enemies, or animals like mammoths, I'll wonder why the most obvious defence is not an option. An unnecessary annoyance which could easily have been avoided. If spears are too hard to balance then what can we expect from the combatsystem in general?

... Nerd rage done.

And I hope to God that you never, ever, ever see any Elder Scrolls again, and that you're forced to live a lonely, lonely, funless life full of unhappiness.

But, seriously, dude, don't be a jerk. Nobody likes someone who slams other people's opinions down just because they happen to really, really want a particular feature in a game. That's how games get better, because the fans suggest things that they want to developers and hope that they might include them in the next one and make an overall better game.

I've tried actually addressing people's posts in a logical, rational manner, and the response has been something like NO U!!!1 I WANNT SPAERS, damn near every time. Development issues? Balance issues? NO BUT LIEK OTHER GAEMS DO HOW HARD IS IT BAWWWW. Maybe my issue isn't just that people keep asking, but because time and again, they ask in an entirely petulant way and downright refuse to listen to any opinion to the contrary. Why would I bother debating this yet again, when I know that means dealing with the same stubborn ignorance and tired repetition that makes up every other spear thread on the forum?

If you'd wish me a "lonely, lonely, funless life full of unhappiness" over a single weapon in a video game, I think you need to go spend some time outside.

I've said this once and I'll say it again; why not add as much weapons as possible? Worst case scenario is that nobody uses them.

because each weapon has its own animations, finishing moves, and perks - and I'd imagine they want to release the game this decade.

Yes. Let that be our flagship point. It is a true and accurate one. Tell the masses and spread the word!

We want the traditional weapon of the Vikings in this game!

What is a spear in the classical sense? When we get that sorted out we can start speculating. A spear is classically used in three ways: Either a smaller type of lance on horseback, a throwing weapon on the battlefield, introducing a leather rope at it to increase speed and accuracy and then we have the shield + spear x 100 infantry soldiers in four lines, keeping the enemies away with spears. Alexander the great used 4 lines of spear men, all could reach out and attack the enemies.

Other classic ways of using spears that I can come up with are hunting animals, by either throwing the spear or simply stick the spear right in the animal when it charges.

Both spears and halberds where nicely implemented in Demon's Souls, however the halberds where a bit over powered :)

I have it on good authority that 'not in the classical sense' really means they are a three handed weapon.

Maybe the reason why they're not including spears is because they're taking the Oblivion route and having the same basic combat animations for all weapons just at different speeds, now back off before I stab you with my hammer.

We already know polearms are more or less confirmed as they were shown in the concept art. We also know spears will not make an appearance as having the inherent ability to stab would give spears and unfair advantage over all other melee weapons. Who wants to poke people anyway?

Oblivion concept art had spears too

No, the reason there won't be spears "in the classical sense" is because it would require a new weapontype just for spears, while halberds could be put under two-handed axes. It would require to rebalance everything and add more perks and advantages for spears.

Also, the "spears being OP" issue is moot, because the game will have Polearms with long reach, so basically they would have the exact same problem.

I remember something....
Freedom of Speech.
I'll sit here making spear threads all day if I want to.
Give me a "logical, rational" reason why we shouldn't have spears. And then we'll take you seriously.
If you cant.
Then we just end up: "dealing with the same stubborn ignorance and tired repetition" - That whiners like you bring.
Being Repetitive is better than not being Constructive.

there is no reason why spears couldnt be implemented in the game and balanced. mount and blade has them in and they are balanced out by being ineffective at very close ranges. which makes sense since once you get inside of the swing arc of a spear they are less effective than shorter weapons that can maneuver around easier. i can understand throwing weapons be left out and even crossbows to a certain extent but spears are probably the most commonly used melee weapons in history. there is no reason for them not to be in. prevent them from striking when an enemy is right in your face or make them hit walls once in awhile whenever your in tight spaces.

Don't care too much for halberd and such. I rather hope for a HUGE game with LOTS of quests and neverending-like feeling like in Oblivion!
